Loboes Serve Rebels

September 12, 2013

LaMoure volleyball (1-0 overall) defeated Edgeley-Kulm (0-1 Class District 5, 0-1), 3-0 (25-9, 25-8, 25-14), on Tuesday night.

LaMoure's Jade Wagner racked up six aces, Anna Holen four, Abby Warcken four and Courtney Carlson two more.

Wagner supplied 16 assists, Jackie Meiklejohn 15 of her own.

Talitha Hirschkorn registered four blocks, Kennedy Witt two and Siri Armitage one.

Warcken hustled for 23 digs, Carlson 17 and Holen 11.

Carlson punished the Rebels for 11 kills, Holen eight, Hirschkorn seven and Armitage four.

LaMoure's B and C Teams also won, 2-0 each.

Here Comes Thunder Football

If you hear the roar of thunder, you’d better head for cover.

Valley City Thunder Football starts its 13th season in 2013.

“When we first started this program, our goal was to make the Thunder Football program a strong and rich tradition in youth football," said Thunder Football Director Mike Lentz. "Thirteen years later, our numbers are great, the excitement is there and the support from the community is overwhelming."

The Deal on Drugs: Meth

Editor's Note: The recent arrests of two Valley City residents for possessing a sellable amount of methampethamine brought attention to the prevalence of drug use in the area. For the next couple of weeks, reporter Bonnie Jo Hanson will examine drug use in and around Valley City and its effects on the community. The first two articles detail the two most common abused drugs locally, methamphetamine and marijuana. In future articles, Hanson will explore what it's like to be an addict, the financial and personal costs of using illegal drugs, and what might done to slow the epidemic.

Ost Co-Golfer of the Week

Shane Ost of Valley City State and Kameron Hunter of Jamestown were named the first Co-North Star Athletic Association Men’s Golfers of the Week, the NSAA announced Monday.

Ost continued his hot start to the fall golf season with an even-par 72 and a first-place finish in the Bismarck State Mystics Invitational on Sept. 3. Ost’s big day paced the Viking men’s golf team to a score of 307 and a first-place finish at the six-team meet.

Jamestown volleyball (8-4) brought a four-game win streak to town against Valley City State (4-7), who were on a two-game win streak of their own, for the first North Star Athletic Conference clash between the rivals on Wednesday night.

Scoring streaks told the story of the back-and-forth match — seven-and-eight-point leads did not last long for either squad — but Jamestown took the match, 3-0 (25-21, 29-27, 25-19).

Packers Blank Hi-Liners

Hi-Liner tennis (1-3 EDC, 1-3 overall) looked to make it two wins in a row as West Fargo (4-1, 8-1) came to town for a conference match on Tuesday night.

The veteran Packers had other ideas, and came away with a 9-0 win.

Undefeated Deacons Spike Hi-Liners

Hi-Liner volleyball (1-1, 5-3) looked to keep third place in the Eastern Dakota Conference as they hosted conference rival Shanley (3-0, 9-0) on Tuesday night after rallying from a two-set deficit in a 3-2 loss to Fargo Davies the night before.

Valley City kept it close in all three games, but Shanley powered to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-19) win.

Jessica Denholm led the Hi-Liners in assists with 23. Ellie Winter added three, and Danica Diegel two more.

Denholm connected on Valley City's lone ace and totaled 13 digs, Claire Olson 12, Dierra Diegel 11.

NDSU's North Dakota Rural Leaders Chosen

Barnes County native Stacey Lilja of Leonard was one of the members of the North Dakota State University Extension Service's sixth Rural Leadership North Dakota class.
"I'm extremely honored to be chosen,” Lilja said Wednesday.

T-R Carrier Receives Customer Service Award

A Times-Record newspaper carrier received an award for her customer service Wednesday morning. Diana Gehlhoff, an Open Door Center resident, has been delivering the newspaper for about a year-and-a-half and has received many compliments, she said.
One person was impressed enough to nominate Gehlhoff for the Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce monthly community service award.
Chamber ambassadors and other community members presented the award to Gehlhoff Wednesday morning in an ODC building.
