Week Designated As Farmers Union Youth Week

North Dakota Farmers Union is celebrating May 5-11 as Farmers Union Youth Week, a proclamation signed by Governor Jack Dalrymple.
Youth week is held each year to recognize the NDFU camping and education programs.

Airport Authority Meeting Time, Location Changed

The Barnes County Municipal Airport Authority monthly meeting regular time and meeting location have been changed. The meeting will be held Monday, May 6 beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Wagon Wheel Inn meeting room.

Corps of Engineers Recognizes Scott Tichy

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, selected Tower City resident Scott Tichy as one of its three Civil Servants of the Year this year.
Tichy said Thursday, “It's nice to be recognized for doing my job. I have never gotten it (the award) before. I'm fortunate to be named – it's kind of humbling. It's nice to be recognized for doing your everyday job.”

Back on the Field

Time has come again for students at Jefferson Elementary to spend next Friday afternoon on the field at this year's second annual Jefferson Field Day. The theme this year: Monkey Business.
Principal Troy Miller said May 17 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. the students will compete with their classmates in a variety of field games and crafts at Hanna Field.

Wednesday's Barnes County Tornado Drill Successful

Wednesday's Barnes County tornado siren drill was a success, except for one siren that failed to operate properly, said Kim Franklin, Barnes County emergency management director.
“I only had one complaint. All but one worked right – in Fingal,” Franklin said Thursday.

Vehicle Break-Ins Reported

May 2, 2013

Eight vehicle break-ins were reported to the Valley City Police Department on Tuesday and Wednesday. Police believe several more cases have gone unreported.
Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson said on Monday and Tuesday nights, someone opened unlocked car doors and stole items that were easily available.

Man OK After Ice Mishap

May 2, 2013

A Fargo man attempting to ice fish on Sanborn Lake 11:54 a.m. Tuesday fell through the ice into water up to his waist, and was so embarrassed he drove back home declining treatment, said Valley City Fire Chief Gary Retterath.
Barnes County Sheriff Randy McClaflin said Wednesday, “he went in the water up to his waist, got cold and declined treatment.”
McClaflin said he could not understand why anybody would try to ice fish on the last day of April. “I hope he won't repeat and it is a lesson learned.”

VCPS Makeup Plans

May 2, 2013

Valley City Public Schools superintendent Dean Koppelman announced in an email Tuesday the school district's plans if they have to make up a snow day.
The school board sent a request to the Department of Public Instruction and North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple's Office to waive having to makeup the missed day of school Monday, April 15. Koppelman said, "We may not have an answer to that request until the first part of next week."

12 Innings Weren't Enough

The NAIA Unaffiliated Baseball Tournament started Wednesday, and the first game was a barnburner. The Valley City State University Vikings took on the Dakota State Trojans. The Trojans came into the tournament seeded #5, and Vikings #4.
The morning game began quietly. A strong wind came in from right field, but had little affect on hitters later in the game. The Trojans scored once in the second inning, and again in the fourth. The Vikings put a run on the board in the bottom of the fourth, and then in the fifth, all heck broke loose with the bats.

Rain Predicted For Weekend

May 1, 2013

For Saturday during the day, the National Weather Service predicts a chance of rain, partly sunny, with a high near 51. On Saturday night, the forecast calls for a chance of rain and snow, mostly cloudy, with a low around 37.
On Sunday, Ewens said the forecast shows a chance of rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 57. For Sunday night, the NWS predicts partly cloudy, with a low around 39.
