Trzpuc in Miss ND Preliminary

Kathryn resident Emily Trzpuc competed in a preliminary for the Miss North Dakota title recently in the Montpelier High School gymnasium.
Thirteen young women from across the state competed for the titles of Miss Fort Abercrombie, Miss Peace Garden, and Miss James River Valley. Trzpuc and other contestants were each awarded a $100 scholarship. The winner of the Fort Abercrombie title received a $2,000 scholarship and the winners of the Peace Garden and James River Valley titles each received a $500 scholarship.

DNP Unveils New Logo

The Dakota Nursing Program faculty and students recently officially revealed their new logo.
Timing for the new logo matches up with planned changes this fall when the program its lab and office area to Valley City State University in the renovated portion of the thirdfloor of the Rhoades Science Center.

VC Women Make, Sell Incense

A mother-daughter duo in Valley City has started a small business, making and selling incense, leather pouches and more.
Jamie Bowen and her mother Sheree Bowen sell their products at Really Big Music in Valley City and at various flea markets throughout the area.
Jamie said, "We sell incense that we make ourselves, Zippo lighters, handmade leather pouches and lighter holders and tapestries."

New Business? Try North Dakota

North Dakota was recently named the third best state to do business in a CNBC survey, up from fifth place in 2012 and just behind South Dakota, which was number one, and number two ranking Texas. According to the survey, one of the forces driving the state's strong finish was its number two ranking in the economy category, spurred by record oil production in the Bakken Oil Fields.

Piller Theater Curtain Being Hung

The old Piller Theater curtain, in storage since the 1960s, has been moved from Valley City High School to the Valley City Parks and Recreation Rec Center and will be hung for display in the near future.
Becky Heise, a researcher for the Barnes County Historical Society, speculated Thursday the curtain will be hung “within the next couple of weeks.”
“We have to wait for the contractor to have time to put up the brackets so we can put it up.”

'Viper Cup' golf tournament and auction fundraiser

"On Friday, July 19, The Valley City Hockey Club known as "The Vipers" is having their annual "Viper Cup" golf tournament and auction fundraiser.

The golf tournament and auction will be held at the Valley City Country Club with the auction beginning around 6 p.m.

Some of the items up for auction are a "Parise" Minnesota Wild jersey autographed by Zach Parise (UND and current NHL Wild player), an autographed hockey stick (Bauer TotalOne NXG) used by Chris Porter (UND and current NHL St. Louis Blues player), and a Matt Cullen (Wild) autographed stick.

Doctors, Mercy Reach Agreement

Doctors at the Valley City Sanford Clinic have decided to continue their privileges at Mercy Hospital after discussions between the four doctors, clinic operations director Linda Lane and Hospital Administrator Keith Heuser.
Thursday doctors Genevieve Goven, Dave Hochhalter, Misty Anderson and James Buhr met with Heuser and Lane and decided to rescind their resignations of hospital privileges slated for Aug. 1.

Health Department, Social Services One Step Closer to Move

City/County Health will likely move into the First Community Credit Union building on Fourth Street, Valley City, later this year, and Barnes County Social Services will likely share the space.
During its regular meeting on Tuesday, Barnes County commissioners voted 3-2 to move forward with the purchase of the building asking that Barnes County State's Attorney look over a purchase agreement before one is entered into.

Valley City Swings Away at Shanley

Valley City took on Shanley last night in two games of fastpitch softball, at home in Valley City. Shanley was playing with a somewhat depleted roster, and, in fact, had to borrow Haley Schnaidt from Valley City to fill out the squad.
Coach Erika Caulkins's team was all long-ball, pulling off two grand slams in the two games, plus several single- and multi-run homers. Danica Diegel was on the rubber for Valley City in game one, and with one exception threw the ball past Shanley batters.

Sanford Doctors Staying in VC

Doctors at the Valley City Sanford Clinic will remain in Valley City, despite a decision by four clinic doctors to terminate their privileges at Mercy Hospital as of Aug. 1.
The four doctors who gave notice June 24 were Genevieve Govan, Dave Hochhalter, Misty Anderson and James Buhr.
Tuesday Paulette Amundson, vice president for Sanford Health regional clinics based in Fargo said “the doctors are not leaving the clinic and are working with Mercy Hospital administration to try and resolve the dispute.”
