Kathleen Jensen and Myrna Leininger have joined the Lutheran Social Services Senior Companions program as a volunteer senior companion in the Barnes County area.
As senior companions, Jensen and Leininger provide free in-home assistance with daily living activities and social and recreational opportunities to help local seniors who are lonely, isolated, frail, disabled or homebound.

A local hip-hop artist is performing a show in Fargo later this month. Erik Kiley, 19, of Valley City, will open for Pledge Empire Records, a group of hip-hop artists based out of the Twin Cities, at concert venue The New Direction in Fargo Sept. 21.
The show begins at 5 p.m., and tickets are $5 in advance or $7 at the door. Kiley can be reached for tickets via Facebook or on his cell phone at (701) 334-9006.
Kiley said his hip-hop career stemmed from writing poetry when he was younger. He began writing lyrics about a year ago.
Local author Wayne McKirdy will be at the Barnes County Museum Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to promote his book, â€śTogether.â€ť
The Rev. Wayne McKirdy, a retired Methodist pastor, described the book he wrote with his wife, Maybelle, as a love story about their courtship and 51 years they spent together.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2010 suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in the country. That year, someone in the U.S. died of suicide every 13.7 minutes.
In fact, in 2002, the year Wellness in the Valley was started by Debbie Anderson, Barnes County had one of the highest rural suicide rates in the nation. Two years ago, five Barnes County residents committed suicide in a four-month period.

Valley City Public Schools is excited to announce that Mr. Waylon Starr has been named the new Hi-Liner girls' head basketball coach.
Starr is in his seventh year as an educator in Valley City and will begin his second stint as head coach of the girls basketball program. Mr. Starr has been directly involved with the girls' basketball program for six years as an assistant coach, head coach, and athletic director.
Litchville-Marion Montpelier (0-2 overall) hosted Pingree-Buchanon (1-0 District 5) for P-B's first match of the season on Tuesday night.
Pingree-Buchanon kept their season rolling with a hard-fought 3-1 (25-22, 25-12, 25-21) District 5 road win.
P-B's Jordan Thomas scooped 13 digs, Megan Thomas 12. Thomas connected on four aces and Lindsey Saxberg four more. Saxberg piled up 12 assists, Jordan Thomas also elevated for two blocks and 12 kills. Morgan Thomas punished LMM with seven more.
Valley City State University is pleased to once again offer the Junior Viking Club for fans in the 6th grade or younger.
Junior Vikings receive numerous benefits including free admission to all VCSU home athletic events in 2013-14, an official club T-Shirt, and opportunities to meet Viking players and be introduced at select home games.

Wilbur Gabel and his grandsons Noah and Cameron Gabel, all from Valley City, competed in the North Dakota State Horseshoe Singles and the State Horseshoe Doubles competitions over the last two weekends in Fargo and Jamestown.
Wilbur took home the Elders Singles Title for the second year in a row. Noah brought home the Cadet Singles Championship for the third time, while Cameron placed third in State Singles Junior division.
