After just four days off following a 16-game, 12-day Tucson, Ariz. stretch, Valley City State baseball opens their in-state games this weekend with doubleheaders at Dickinson State on Saturday and Sunday.
As of Thursday afternoon, Saturdayâ€™s forecast in Dickinson calls for a high near 59 degrees and mostly sunny skies. Sundayâ€™s games could be in jeopardy as the forecast calling for a chance of rain and a high near 40 degrees. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Mountain Time on Saturday, and 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Mountain Time on Sunday.
A pair of Valley City State University menâ€™s basketball recruits have received even more postseason awards.
Milnor 6-foot-3-inch senior guard Briton Bussman, who became the Class B Senior Athlete of the Year on March 8, was also a finalist and finished second in voting for the North Dakota Mr. Basketball Award. Bussmanâ€™s latest honor came with First Team All-State distinction on March 24 that followed All-Region and All-District status.
A small group of North Dakota Army National Guard soldiers assigned to the Valley City-based 231st Brigade Support Battalion have received an alert notification for possible mobilization, said the unit's commander, Capt. Nicolette Daschendorf. More in Thursday's issue of the Times-Record.
A novel by Arizona resident Judith Grout is partially set in Valley City, which she calls Felicity, N.D. in the book. The novel, called, "Chasing the Strawberry Moon: Hitchiking (for girls)," is based on the true story of Grout's late mother-in-law's journey with her friend across the western United States during the summer of 1939.

Valley City will hold its annual tax equalization meeting on Tuesday, April 8 at 4 p.m. in the commission chambers at City Hall.

BEK Communications has started work on improving high-speed Internet communications in Barnes County, with Barnes County Commissioners last week hearing the company's request for an easement through the riparian gardens along the Kathryn Road south of Valley City. Parents should be parents, not their children's friends. This was the message of Deputy Doug Muske of the Stutsman County Narcotics Task Force, who addressed parents and teachers of Valley City Public School students Monday.

Dietrich and Sons, Inc., which is the contracted bus service for the Valley City Public School District, wants to remind residents that they should not pass a school bus when the stop sign is up.
Brian Yanish, transportation safety specialist, said the company has seen a recent rise in people disobeying the law and driving through stop signs on the school bus when drivers are loading and unloading kids. He said bus drivers have observed 24 incidents in Valley City since the beginning of the school year.
