NDSU's North Dakota Rural Leaders Chosen

September 12, 2013

Barnes County native Stacey Lilja of Leonard was one of the members of the North Dakota State University Extension Service's sixth Rural Leadership North Dakota class.
"I'm extremely honored to be chosen,” Lilja said Wednesday.

T-R Carrier Receives Customer Service Award

A Times-Record newspaper carrier received an award for her customer service Wednesday morning. Diana Gehlhoff, an Open Door Center resident, has been delivering the newspaper for about a year-and-a-half and has received many compliments, she said.
One person was impressed enough to nominate Gehlhoff for the Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce monthly community service award.
Chamber ambassadors and other community members presented the award to Gehlhoff Wednesday morning in an ODC building.

Police Seek Park Fountain Vandals

A culprit or culprits in the May vandalism of the decorative water fountain in City Park has still not be found four months after the incident took place.
Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson said Wednesday, "The culprits have not been located, and the investigation is continuing."

Hi-Liner Football Announcements

Hi-Liner Football has a few reminders for this Friday's game against Grafton:

1. The south street entrance to Hanna Field is still under construction and will not be open this week. VCHS asks all fans to enter through the west gate and apologizes for the inconvenience and anticipates that it will be open for the next home game on Sept. 27th vs. Maple Valley/Enderlin.

2. Stoudt-Ross Ford will host a chili dog feed on the south side of the grand stands starting at 5 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the tailgate. All proceeds will go to the Valley City Booster Club.

Valley City Youth Bowling Starts Saturday and Sunday

Valley City Youth Bowling gets rolling this Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 14-15).

Saturday Youth League for boys and girls, grades K-6, begins at 9 a.m.

Sunday Youth League, grades 7-12, begins this Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

VC Youth Bowling is open to all area youth. Valley City has an open membership program, so new members may join any time during the season.

NSAA to Recognize Inaugural Seasons

The North Star Athletic Association will recognize the inaugural season at each member institution’s first home conference event by throwing a commemorative t-shirt into the fan sections as significant landmarks are reached for the first time by the home team.

Each NSAA sport that sponsors a championship event throughout the year will have landmark ‘firsts’ in the history of the NSAA that will trigger a t-shirt toss into the fan section.

Fans are encouraged to attend to help celebrate the milestones as they come along, according to NSAA Commissioner Cory Anderson.

Valley City State University ranked No. 2 in Category

Valley City State University earned the No. 2 spot among Top Public Regional Colleges in the Midwest in the 2014 edition of U.S. News Best Colleges, said Greg Vanney, VCSU director of marketing and communications.
Tuesday Vanney said, this marks the fifth straight year that VCSU has been ranked either first or second in its category, the fifth consecutive year that VCSU has been North Dakota’s highest-rated Public Regional College, and the 16th year in a row that VCSU has been recognized by U.S. Newsas a “Best College.”

VC Pair Arrested for Narcotics

Two Valley City residents were arrested in Fargo Monday and face several drug-related charges.
With the assistance of drug-seeking dogs, the Valley City residents, a man, 39, and a woman, 37, were arrested during a traffic stop after an ongoing investigation.

VC Keeps Mindy Morgenstern's Memory Alive With Garden

A garden honoring Mindy Morgenstern is still blooming seven years after she was murdered in her off-campus apartment in Valley City.
Morgenstern was a 22-year-old Valley City State University senior when she was strangled and stabbed to death by then-Barnes County jailer Moe Gibbs Sept. 13, 2006.
To honor Morgenstern, several Valley City people created a memorial garden in the spring of 2007. Dan Preston was one of the individuals who helped establish the foundation of the garden with his gifts and labor.

Saturday Air Show Set for Airport

The public is invited to a free air show Saturday at the Barnes County Municipal Airport, said Shawn Anderson, chairman of the Barnes County Airport Authority.
The show, which will be put on by Paul and Jarrod Lindemann, fixed base operators for the airport, will start at 6 p.m. and last for about 20 minutes, said airport Manager Mike Lerud.
