WEST FARGO â€” For the first month of the season, the Valley City High School girls basketball team was tested in plenty of ways. Overtime. Large comebacks.
But after a 68-47 loss Tuesday at West Fargo High School, the previously undefeated Hi-Liners faced their toughest challenge yet â€” the defending state runner-up.
Though the Hi-Liner girls opened the game with a point-for-point run with the Packers, a lack of scoring late in the first half kept Valley City from winning their seventh straight to start the season.
St. Catherineâ€™s Church in Valley City is seeking volunteers for its largest fundraiser for its faith-based programs Jan. 23.
Debbie Carpenter, administrative assistant, said there are various shifts open, and people are especially needed to assist with clean, which begins after the supper at 7 p.m.
She said the church also needs people to waitress tables, run games in the gym, and help with â€śodds and ends things.â€ť

Womenâ€™s Division board members are hard at work preparing for the annual North Dakota Winter Show that runs March 5 to 10 in facilities on Winter Show Road.
Board President Mary Ann Leier said this yearâ€™s board members are Marie Baumgartner, Mary Ann Berntson, Joan Carlblom, Leier, Karen Overn, Joy Berntson, Lois Bjornson, Coni Horsager, Carole Miedema.
Area gun sales and applications for concealed carry permits are up, possibly as a result of new legislation recently introduced in the U.S. Senate that would ban assault-style weapons.
Last month, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) introduced a bill that would stop the sale, transfer, importation and manufacturing of many assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
Valley Drug in Valley City recently acquired a North Dakota-based program called Zoovio that transcodes video tape and allows users to watch them on any internet connected device.
Zoovio has the ability to digitize 47 different types of video tape including VHS. A user can then access their videos from any internet connected device including smart phones, tablets, computers and televisions.
On Friday, Dec. 14, an armed gunman entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Conn. and killed 26 people, including 20 first-graders.
Since then, faculty and staff at area schools have taken a hard look at their own plans of response should such violence erupt in their own hallways.
Teachers and other staff at Washington Elementary School met Thursday with Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson to discuss the schoolâ€™s current emergency plan and how to improve it.
Jeff Bopp, director of the Sheyenne Valley Area Career and Technology Center, is thrilled with the donation of 10 new state-of-the-art welding helmets from the John Deere Seeding Co.
The program received a total of 10 auto darkening Speedglass 3M welding helmets.
Bopp said the helmets feature a lens that is totally clear but the instant an arc is struck the lens turns dark to prevent a welding flash and likewise the lens instantly becomes clear as soon as the welding arc stops.
As the clock wound down in the Valley City High School girls basketball team's 55-51 win over St. Mary's Saturday at the Hi-Liner Activity Center, junior Dierra Diegel consistently found herself in a high pressure situation.
Not only was she playing the final five minutes of the second half with four fouls, but of the Hi-Liners' final eight free throws in the game, Diegel took six.
"I knew those free throws were going to count, so I was thinking, 'I've got to make these. I've got to put them in, separate it, make it so they don't have any last second chance to win the game," Diegel said.
The Valley City State University mens basketball team has spent the entire season adapting to the injuries sustained by various team members.
Friday, in the team's 78-67 win over NCAA Division III's University of Minnesota â€” Morris, the Vikings were short their tall post player Gus Kuebler, who isn't injured, but had the night off as the team readies for a key stretch of the season.
With Kuebler out of the lineup, VCSU coach Jeff Kaminsky encouraged his guards to help grab rebounds, and more than anyone, senior John Raquel responded.
