Nudell, Maple Valley Kill at Valley City Optimist Tournament

Maple Valley volleyball beat LaMoure/Litchville-Marion 2-0 (25-14, 25-22), smashed Glen Ullin 2-0 (25-10, 25-12) and outmatched Oakes 2-0 (27-25, 25-17) in pool play at the Valley City Optimist Tourney on Saturday.

The Raiders fell to Valley City, however, in a very close 2-0 (21-25, 22-25) tournament match.

Abbie Tinjum served eight aces in the tournament, Rylee Nudell six, Megan Kasowski five and Ashley Punton two.

Tinjum dished out 36 assists, Katie Pautz 19, Kasowski three, Lexi Berntson two, Nudell, Kaylee Hanson, Punton and Kara Smith one each.

VCHS Homecoming King, Queen Crowned

September 24, 2013

Valley City High School crowned this year’s homecoming king and queen at coronation Monday evening.
This year’s king is Mason Bjornson, chosen from nominees Mason Bjornson, Nick Stevens and Dustin Lindgren.
This year’s queen is Gabby Cummings, chosen from nominees Gabby Cummings, Sara Gilbertson and Tia Wagar.

Shanenko Finalist for Top Teacher

Kristi Shanenko, an English language arts teacher from Valley City Junior-Senior High School, was one of four finalists for the 2014 North Dakota Teacher of the year.
In May, Valley City Public Schools named Shanenko, junior and senior high English teacher, as teacher of the year for the school district.
After receiving the local honor, Shanenko said, “I'm so proud to be here. I'm humbled and grateful and I'm honored.”

Epworth United Methodist Church Gearing Up for Bazaar

Members of Epworth United Methodist Church in Valley City are gearing up for the church's annual bazaar and luncheon early next month.
Church member Helen Noeske said, "Caring and sharing is what life is all about. On Saturday, Oct. 5, share your day by treating someone you care about to a pleasant outing – to savor the October beauty, taste tried and true favorites at the noon luncheon and visit the seven shops of unique, attractive and useful crafts, gift baskets and foods."

ND DOT Works on I-94

East-bound traffic on Interstate 94 from the Eckelson turnoff to just west of Valley City will be limited to one lane through Tuesday evening as workers complete a slurry seal project, said John Thompson, Valley City-based District Engineer for the North Dakota Department of Transportation.
Work began on the project on Sunday with signs posted and cones placed, continued Monday, and was expected to be finished by this evening, Thompson said.

Hi-Liner XC Hosts Blue and White Invite

Hi-Liner Cross Country hosted the Bill Jansen Blue and White Invite at Bjornson Golf Course on Saturday, an event in which 50 North Dakota teams and over 1,200 runners raced for the crown.

"As this is a State year for the Hi-Liners, teams from all over the state came to Valley City to experience the State Meet course," Valley City Cross Country Coach Brian Engelhard said. "Bismarck High won the Boys' Varsity division, and Century won the Girls' Varsity. The competition was extremely tough, as the best from Class A and B were running together."

Service Master Atop Hi-Lo Bowling League

Valley City's Hi-Lo Bowling League returned to competition on Sept. 17.

Service Master won four games against Sky Lanes, Bank Forward took four games from Leevers Foods, 20-20 Auto Center went 3-1 against J & S Ladies, and Valley Lumber finished 3-1 against Chrissy Faye Photography.

20-20 Auto Center had the team high score with 798 pins. Bank Forward had the team high across four games with 2287.

Mary Berntson was the single-game individual high scorer with 221. Kandice Nelson was the individual high scorer with 536.

Hi-Liner Volleyball Takes 3rd at Optimist Tournament

Hi-Liner volleyball hosted the Optimist Tournament on Saturday, beating Carrington for third place after a loss to LaMoure in tournament play.

Power Outage in Southwest Valley City

September 23, 2013

Power went out in southwest Valley City along West Main Street about 3:10 p.m. Monday and still had not been restored by about 3:40 p.m., said Lori Glaser, administrative support employee with Valley City.
Glaser said public works employees responded to the reported outage and were still working on restoring full power at about 3:40 p.m.
"It is still out in parts of the area. A cause has not yet been determined," Glaser said.

Vikings Cage Lions

A breezy night at Lokken Stadium became a bitter chill for Trinity Bible College (1-2) as Derek Elliott of Valley City State (2-1) ran for 193 yards and a record five touchdowns to become the Vikings' career and single-game rushing touchdown leader en route to a 66-6 win.
