Sun Dog Illuminates Valley City Sky

January 23, 2014

Scientifically known as parhelion, but often called sun dogs or ice halos, many area residents spotted this ring of light around the sun over Valley City Wednesday morning. The atmospheric phenomenon creates bright spots of light in the sky, often on a luminous ring or halo. They're usually made by the refraction of light from ice crystals in the air during very cold weather.

VC Beet Meeting Set for Jan. 28

A meeting Jan. 28 at the Valley City Eagles Club has been set up in preparation for a decision on whether or not to locate an industrial beet plant in Valley City or one of four other cities. More in Thursday's issue of the Times-Record.

VCPS Could Lose Class A Status

An enrollment projection chart shows that Valley City Public School District could lose its Class A status in just a couple years. The class A enrollment threshold set by the North Dakota High School Activities Association is 325 students, and according to the chart created by Activities Director Marty Bratrud, Valley City could drop below that number by 2016.

School Board Waits to Meet with Teachers

The Valley City Public School Board is still waiting to meet with the Valley City Education Association to settle an impasse in contract negotiations between the two entities. During Monday's school board meeting, board president Joyce Braunagel gave an overview of the negotiation process so far and said the teachers still haven't met since the board asked them to in November.

NDSU Women Take Down VCSU, 83-61

January 22, 2014

North Dakota State junior guard Brooke LeMar scored 21 points and sophomore forwards Holly Johnson and Marena Whittle 20 and 18, respectively, as the Bison defeated Valley City State, 83-61, in an exhibition game in Fargo on Wednesday night.

Viking junior guard Sadiqah Jihad and junior forward Megan Trautman put up 10 points each to lead VCSU.

NDSU shot 52 percent in the game to VCSU's 32 percent. The Bison scored 50 points in the paint, the Vikings 22.

With the loss, the Vikings' six-game win streak came to an end.

BC May Loan $300K to AP

Meeting Tuesday, Barnes County Commissioners agreed to loan as much as $300,000 to the Barnes County Airport Authority to cover costs of a new hangar and taxiway until grant funds arrive. More in Wednesday's issue of the Times-Record.

BC OKs Policy Revisions

After an hour of discussion Barnes County Commissioners approved a revised employee policy manual on a 3-2 vote Tuesday. More in Wednesday's issue of the Times-Record.

Valley City Public School teachers Kathy Lentz, Kristi Shanenko and Mel Klingenberg were recognized for awards they recently received during Monday's school board meeting.

Enderlin Girls Squeeze by LaMoure/Litchville-Marion

Enderlin senior center Kelsey Laufenberg scored 16 points, senior forward Megan Johnson 15 and junior forward Mai Syverson 11 as the Eagles held on against LaMoure/Litchville-Marion in LaMoure, 51-44.

Points abounded on Tuesday night as Enderlin sophomore guard/forward GrahamHurlburt scored 27 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range, senior guard Daniel Lindgren 24 on 3-of-4 from downtown, senior center Jared Kittleson 12 and senior guard Austin Dixson 10 as the Eagles soared over LaMoure/Litchville-Marion in LaMoure, 82-65.
