A Farm Bill Compromise?

A new five-year Farm Bill could be close at hand, according to statements from U.S. Senators John Hoeven (R,) and Heidi Heitkamp (D-NPL). On the table is a 1,000-page bipartisan bill that cuts food stamps by 1 percent yet provides subsidies and other programs for farmers.

Lady Hi-Liners Defend Osmon Fieldhouse on National Guard Night

Lady Hi-Liner basketball hosted Eastern Dakota Conference rival Wahpeton on North Dakota National Guard Night at Valley City State’s W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse, a site agreed upon with savvy scheduling adjustments, on Tuesday night and rode a strong second half to a 54-38 win.

Fire Destroys VC Home

An early-morning fire left a Valley City family homeless Tuesday after destroying the residence and sending three family members to the hospital for minor injuries.

The Valley City Fire Department responded to a fire at the Schonert residence at 542 Fourth Avenue SW, Valley City at about 1:30 a.m. and battled the flames in sub-zero temperatures for the next five hours.

Adult Prom on Valentine's Day

The Valley City Eagles Club is hosting an adult prom, complete with winter wonderland decorations, food and a grand march, this Valentine's Day. Manager Rich Hass said the doors open at the club Friday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m., and the band, Boomtown, starts at 8:30 p.m. Hass said the cost is $5 per person and requests that attendees RSVP to the Valley City Eagles Club at (701) 845-2192 by Feb. 7.

Xcel Energy Monday announced it was no longer asking its natural gas customers in eastern North Dakota to turn thermostats down to 60 degrees to deal with an emergency. More in Tuesday's issue of the Times-Record.

Low Chance For Spring Flooding

The first 2014 spring flooding prediction for Valley City shows a lower chance than normal for any type of flooding by April 27, according to Mike Lukes, National Weather Service hydrologist for the Grand Forks office. More in Tuesday's issue of the Times-Record

34 N.D. Athletes, 11 Coaches to Compete in 2014 Special Olympics USA Games

Special Olympics North Dakota announced on Saturday that 34 North Dakotan athletes and 11 coaches have been selected to participate in the June 14-21, 2014 Special Olympics USA Games in New Jersey.

Team North Dakota athletes will compete in aquatics, athletics (track and field), bowling, powerlifting, and the unified sports of bocce, soccer and volleyball.

NDSU Baseball Offensive Skills Camp Postponed

The North Dakota State University baseball offensive skills camp scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 26, in the Bison Sports Arena was postponed due to travel safety concerns with the incoming blizzard weather conditions, NDSU announced Saturday. It has been rescheduled for Sunday, Feb. 16.

Bison Valentine Victory Blood Drive Feb. 11-12

The 23rd annual Bison Valentine Victory Blood Drive, sponsored by North Dakota State University Athletics and United Blood Services, will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, and from 10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the Bison Sports Arena, NDSU announced Saturday.

Piehl, Carlson, Holen, LLM Cut Down Oakes

Lady Loboes senior guard Tasha Piehl scored 25 points and senior guard/forward Courtney Carlson and 8th-grade guard/forward Anna Holen 16 each as LaMoure/Litchville-Marion led Oakes 42-11 at halftime en route to a 78-32 home win on Saturday night.

Oakes sophomore center Haley Visto led the Tornadoes with nine points.

Next for the Lady Loboes (1-0 District 5, 6-5 overall) is a game against District 5 rival Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier, 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
