Matthew Kidd, who escaped from the Barnes County Jail on Thursday, has been captured and is back in jail facing new charges for fleeing. Kidd was found near Fingal with the help of tips and outside law enforcement agencies. For more information on Matthew Kidd, read Wednesday's Times-Record.
Last week's flooding damaged the basement of the Valley City Law Enforcement Center where evidence in several criminal cases was held. With evidence compromised by flood waters, officials believe some court cases may be lost or dismissed. For more on this story, read Wednesday's Times-Record.
Barnes County Relay for Life co-chair Marge Bessette said the annual cancer fundraiser raised about $33,500 so far this year.
"We are very happy with the amount," she said.
Funds raised benefit the American Cancer Society, which sponsors the Relay, to aid in finding cures and fighting back against cancer.
Mary Dahl, representative with the American Cancer Society, said their goal was to surpass last year's fundraising amount, and "we did that," raising more than the $30,000 raised last year. She expects money will trickle in for at least a week and perhaps throughout the summer.
Following a Thursday evening torrential rainstorm, scattered homes and apartments in Valley City Friday looked to be holding moving sales as couches, beds, throw rugs and much else were placed under the blue sky in the sun to dry, while hoses snaked along lawns and roads dispersing basement water into the streets. Some downtown business spent the morning pumping out, too. But down at the Iron Stallion, owner Brian Mindt was doleful that he would ever be dry.
Mother Nature struck Valley City and Barnes County with a vengeance Thursday, with a tornado reported near Rogers, hail as large as 1.5 inches in diameter dropping in the city and 6.78 inches of rainfall just northwest of Valley City.
Valley City State University reported more than 4 inches of rain had fallen as of about 9 p.m. Thursday.

Cancer survivors, caretakers, friends and family walked together Friday to fight against cancer during the Barnes County Relay for Life.
In a new downtown location, the Relay was held Friday from 5 p.m. to midnight on Central Avenue. The evening started with a survivors reception at 5 p.m., followed by opening ceremonies at 6 p.m.
Funds raised from the annual event go to the American Cancer Society, which sponsors Relay for Life, to find cures and fight back against cancer.
Not only does the Relay raise funds and awareness of cancer, it gives survivors a chance to share their stories.

The Sheyenne Care Center Mission Committee realizing the need for donations of cash and product for the Barnes County Food Pantry recently held a â€śPenny Warâ€ť for the staff to participate in.
The entire cash donation made to the food pantry was $213.84 along with several bags of groceries and paper goods. The winning team was the staff in the Sheyenne Care Center's Special Care Unit, which raised $75.40.

A new coffee shop that will also be a center for arts is slated to open in Valley City a couple months.
The Vault will be a self-service coffee shop and community center located in the old Stavanger building on Central Avenue.
Owners Dave and Kim "Kyly" Brekke will operate the business in a building that Paul Stenshoel owns.
Brekke said Stenshoel was very helpful in finishing the historical reconstruction of the room, which they plan to maintain as a 1920s bank motif.

The Barnes County Sheriff's Department and the Valley City Police Department are searching for Matthew Kidd, 26, who escaped from the Barnes County Jail earlier today. Kidd is 5'11" with sandy blond hair. He has two unidentified tattoos on his left arm, a bear tattoo on his right arm and "A&M" tattooed on his right leg.
Kidd escaped while being taken to recreation: officials believe he is still in the Valley City Area. Kidd is not considered a danger to the public. Anyone with information regarding Kidd or the escape should call the Valley City Police Department at 701-845-3110 or 9-1-1.
