O’Day, Breske New VCSU Football Offensive Coordinators

Valley City State University head football coach Dennis McCulloch announced Friday that coaches John O’Day and Jake Breske have been promoted to co-offensive coordinator positions.

O’Day and Breske replace Marty Costello, who departs for a job at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Costello served as VCSU offensive coordinator for the past three seasons.

Oestern, Larson Wrestle into Team North Dakota

Valley City 7th-grader Jaden Oestern and 6th-grader Parker Larson will represent the Hi-Liners and North Dakota at the April 11-13 Elementary and Middle School Wrestling Duals in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Oestern qualified for Team North Dakota as the qualifying tournament 195-pound runner-up on March 15 in Mandan, N.D. Larson qualified as the 100-Pound Champion.

Also competing for Valley City were Koye Grebel, Jared Undem, Callen Oestern, and Jake Tangen.

Grace Saves a Win against VCSU on the Diamond

Viking baseball outhit Grace University (Neb.) 11-10 on Monday, but Grace came out ahead on the scoreboard with a 5-4 win in Tucson, Ariz.

Valley City State (6-11) looks to rebound on Tuesday as they take on Hastings College (Neb.) at noon CST and Doane (Neb.) at 4 p.m. CST.

Viking Softball Wins 4th Straight

March 18, 2014

Valley City State softball picked up a second straight sweep and won their third and fourth games in a row with Monday’s 6-5 defeat of Doane College (Neb.) and 4-2 triumph over Tabor (Kan.).

The Vikings improve to 8-9 overall and 6-5 in their Tucson, Ariz. Spring Trip.

VCSU plays two games Tuesday, one each against Southwestern (Kan.) at 11 a.m. CST, and British Columbia at 1 p.m. CST.

Digitarium Offers Advanced Space Experience

Students in the Maple Valley School District got to see space in a new way the past week as they learned in a digital planetarium.
The $30,000 Digitarium belongs to the teacher center in Valley City, and 17 school districts throughout the state helped pay for it.

Flood Insurance Rates Expected to Fall

New legislation lowering flood insurance rates is expected to soon be signed by President Obama, said Todd Deutsch, an aide to Sen. Heidi Heitkamp Thursday. More in Monday's issue of the Times-Record.

BC Spellers to State

March 17, 2014

Two Barnes County students will compete next week in the 2014 North Dakota State Spelling Bee Competition in Bismarck.
Ashley Tahran, a seventh-grader at Maple Valley, and Nita Warcken-Peterson, an eighth-grader at Valley City Junior High School, will compete in the state spelling bee on March 21.

Burgers, Beer, Chicken and More at VC's Budget Burger

Restaurant of the Week is a new feature series that looks at area restaurants and what they offer. The new feature runs weekly in the Times-Record.

Budget Burger, located at 951 West Main Street in Valley City and owned by Bob and Tammy Drake, offers an array of burgers including the Western Burger — complete with barbecue sauce, fried onions, pickles, bacon and American cheese — the Jalapeno Burger, made with Swiss cheese, jalapenos and jalapeño sauce, and the Chili Burger.

Viking Softball Goes 1-2 Friday

March 16, 2014

Valley City State softball opened Friday with a 2-1 victory over Baldwin-Wallace, fell in a 10-0 shutout to Dordt College and led for most of the nightcap before losing a 6-3 contest to No. 10-ranked Olivet Nazarene.

The Vikings are now 4-9 on the season and 2-5 in their current Tucson, Ariz. Spring Trip.

VCSU Baseball Splits Friday

March 16, 2014

Valley City State baseball won Friday’s first game against Olivet Nazarene in 5-4 comeback fashion but dropped the nightcap to Dakota Wesleyan, 6-4.

VCSU trailed Olivet 3-1 before producing four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and completing the rally. In game two, Dakota Wesleyan scored three runs in both the first and second innings and held off a Viking rally.
