FARGO, N.D. (AP) â The leader of University of North Dakotaâs alumni on Tuesday kicked off a campaign to dump the schoolâs Fighting Sioux nickname by reeling off a list of schools that will no longer schedule UND in certain athletics until the issue is resolved.
Tim OâKeefe, CEO of the UND Alumni Association and Foundation, said neighboring South Dakota State has joined an increasing number of schools to snub the Grand Forks college because of the nickname. Other schools include Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota-Morris.

VCHS softball wins
The Valley City High School softball team had little issue at the plate in a double header sweep of Fargo Davies Tuesday in Fargo.
Over two wins â 5-3 in game one, 15-1 in game two â the Hi-Liners combined for 29 hits, including 20 in the second game.
The Hi-Liners were led by Amanda Tangen, who went 6-9 over the two games.
In the 15-1 win, she went 4-5 at the plate, including two triples. She had four RBI and scored twice in the game.
Entering her senior season, Valley City High School sprinter Molly Willson knew that her older sister, Morgen, was quite the athlete during her time at VCHS.
What Molly didnât realize, though, was that Morgen held the school record in the 200 meter dash.
âI didnât know she held the record until this year,â Molly said.
So when she found out, she made it her goal to make the record her own, a task she hopes to achieve by the end of the season.
As I walked around our backyard, I noticed that our rose bushes and various perennial plants are becoming green and lush. The tulip and daffodil bulbs have sprouted, dotting our landscape with flowers in shades of red and yellow. After our mild winter, I am mapping out our container gardens and flower beds.
Yes, I like growing things. After all, âGardenâ is my middle name. I couldnât resist saying that.
Valley City State University Associate Professor Hilde van Gijssel has once again been named the âTeacher of the Yearâ by the VCSU Student Senate.
The annual award is given to professors who demonstrate dedication to students with innovative teaching methods and continued professional development.
While teaching in the science department, Van Gijssel is also taking classes in the universityâs Masters of Education program with an emphasis on technology education. She said spending time as a student helps make her a better teacher.
Three people are heroes after risking their lives saving strangers in what turned out to be a busy month of April for law enforcement and emergency responders.
On the evening of April 17, Valley City High School senior Austin Ross happened upon a rollover accident on the 800 block of Fifth Street Northwest. Ross freed the driver who was restrained by a seatbelt by cutting it with scissors.
The June 12 city election will see five candidates vying for two City Commissioner seats vacated by George Dutton and Jon Wagar. This week, the T-R will interview all five candidates to provide a better look at those seeking office and their take on the issues facing Valley City. The Hi-Liners donned their dapperest duds for the 2012 Valley City High School Awards Banquet in the VCHS Theater in the high school on Monday night.
The evening saw several dozen students receive awards and scholarships and the induction of members in to the National Honor Society and the Minerva Chapter of the National Honor Society.
