Bond Set at $1 Million for Murder Suspect

Cedric Chappell, a Valley City State University student accused of killing one man and injuring another in Minneapolis last weekend, did not waive extradition to Minnesota Wednesday, but instead asked for an extradition hearing.
Judge Jay Schmitz set Chappell's bond at $1 million at the request of Barnes County State's Attorney Lee Grossman at the recommendation of the State of Minnesota. Grossman explained to the court that not only did he consider Chappell a danger to the community, but Chappell may also be in danger from those who may seek retribution.

Local Student Earns Large ROTC Scholarship

Former Litchville man and University of North Dakota student Sean Opdahl received a $27,500 Army ROTC scholarship.
Opdahl, a junior at UND, said he received the scholarship after committing to stay in the National Guard.
His major is secondary social studies education, and he is involved with a campus and military ministry.

The Vault Coffee Shop and Bakery Grand Opening Set for Tomorrow

The Vault coffee shop and bakery opens its doors Friday at 11:30 a.m. After the ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m there will be free samples of baked goods. On opening day The Vault will be serving sugar cookies, chocolate chip cookies, pretzels, mini cupcakes, pizza rolls, pumpkin truffles and rock candy.

The Vault is owned and operated by Kimberly “Kyly” Brekke and is the result of four years of restoration by her husband, David Brekke. The Vault is on the main floor of The Stavanger Building, which was originally built as The Bank of Valley City in 1919.

VC-BC Library Broken Into

Someone broke into the Valley City-Barnes County Public Library late Saturday or early Sunday and took a minimal amount of cash from a drawer, said Library Director Steve Hammel.
Hammel said “somebody jimmied the back door lock and came in. There was no damage and a little cash was stolen from a drawer. It was a very inexpensive wakeup call.”
Hammel said he has fixed the back door to the library “and put in deadbolts.”
No library equipment or books were stolen or damaged. The library has little cash on hand – primarily the small amount of money collected from fines, Hammel said.

BC Nixes Campground For Second Time

Karen Anderson and Scott Cole may never be allowed to construct a campgrounds in Getchell Township near Lake Ashtabula.
The couple appeared before Barnes County Commissioners a second time Monday, armed with signatures of 16 township residents who were willing to go on record not opposing the proposed 20-spot campgrounds.

Valley City Will Host State XC Meet

Valley City will host the 2013 State Cross Country meet at Bjornson Park on Saturday, Oct. 26.

"This is going to be a very big event for our community and school," Valley City High School Athletic Director Martin Bratrud said.

Old Settlers League Week 3 Update

October 2, 2013

Old Settlers League bowling returned for Week 3 action.

American Legion No. 2 finished 3-1 against VFW.

Brothers III swept American Legion No.1 4-0.

Hoff & Jan’s Upholstry went 3-1 against Eagles.

Brothers III rolled the high team game (803 pins) and the high team series (2,311).

City Lights won 4 games because of a Bye.

Enterprise took 4 games from K&S Carpet Cleaning.

J&S Marketing finished 3-1 against Tavern 94.

Pizza Corner swept 5 Star Bucking Bulls, 4-0.

City Lights turned in the high team game of 1,131 pins, and the high team series at 3,264.
