South Central Adult Services Offer Wellness Checks

With the Help of a computer program, South Central Adult Services is offering a free service to check on how senior citizens are doing called “RU Okay?.”
Dolly Hoelmer, Barnes County outreach officer, said Wednesday, “If you just pick up the phone, we know they are OK,” Hoelmer said.

Job Service ND Helping Vets, Native Americans

Job Service North Dakota has federal grant money available to help unemployed veterans and Native Americans seeking training or education in oil or construction jobs through June 2014.
Bobbie Miller, one of two consultants working at the Valley City Job Service N.D. Office, said Wednesday the program is open to “any type of veteran and Native Americans meeting the criteria.”

Development Corp. Approves $50K to Help Establish Movie Theater

The Valley City-Barnes County Development Corp. has approved $50,000 to help establish a movie theater in Valley City. Development Corp. director of development Jennifer Feist said Wednesday, "We are letting the community know that the Development Corp. will support the establishment of a theater in Valley City with a $50,000 investment."
She said no one has committed to opening a theater yet, but is optimistic that one or more parties will step forward with this contribution.

Fort Ransom Sodbusters Days Saturday, Sunday

July 10, 2013

This weekend, people will have the chance to see what life was like on a farm during early days at the summer Fort Ransom’s Sodbusters Days 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. After 5 p.m. a meal will be served and a Catholic service will take place at the park.
Admission to the event is $7 per day, with people 12 and under admitted free.

Crump New VSO

Scott Crump has replaced Jim Verwey as the Barnes County Veteran's Service Officer.
Crump, who spent eight years in the National Guard, started his new position on Monday. Verwey, who held the position for eight years, retired earlier this year.
Crump will serve the needs of more than 1,200 Barnes County veterans in a variety of ways: by helping them receive earned benefits including health care and death benefits; with transportation to and from the Veteran's Administration hospital; by fighting for more benefits for veterans and more.

Foss Family Talks About Longtime VC Business

A familiar landmark in Valley City has changed hands, 91 years after its start in Valley City. Foss Drug was purchased from current owner Terry Kristensen by NuCara Pharmacy June 5. The pharmacy started as a family business that was much more than a place to get medication.
Geraldine Foss, wife of the late Cal Foss, who once operated the business, and their two daughters Marcia Foss and Cheryl Rowekamp, all of Valley City, sat down for an interview with the Times-Record last week, reminiscing about their family's business.

CLARIFICATION: Sex Offender's Address Not Verified

An article in the Tuesday, July 9 edition of the Times-Record stated that convicted sex offender Allan Joseph Cook, 35, resides at 305 Fourth Street SE in Valley City. This information has not yet been verified by the Valley City Police Department.
We will provide updated information as we receive it from the VCPD.
The Times-Record regrets the error.

Storage Unit Break-Ins

July 9, 2013

Police are investigating several possible break-ins at a Valley City Storage facility.
According to Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson, a patrol officer noticed an unlocked storage unit late last week at a facility in the Valley City Industrial Park. Further investigation revealed three additional units that had been broken into.
It is unclear what, if any, items were taken.

Monday and Thursday Farmers Market Set

The first Valley City Farmers Market of the 2013 season has been set for 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday in the Shopko parking lot.
The Monday market will be in the parking lot at the Rosebud Visitor's Center, said Market Manager Norma Voidal.

Flower Show Set for Monday

Valley City is ablaze with color after Mother Nature's generous rain this spring. The Sheyenne Valley Garden Club encourages gardeners to "come share that color at the 30th annual Sheyenne Valley Garden Club Flower Show."
Club president Darlene Mueller said the show will be held Monday, July 15 at the Valley City Eagles Club. Judging will take place until 4 p.m., at which time the exhibitors and public are invited to view the show.
"Anyone is encouraged to exhibit their favorite bloom," she said.
