A major change is in the works for the 2012-2013 school year that most students will probably not notice.
Following a nationwide media blitz earlier this year over lean, finely-textured beef â or âpink slime,â as it was dubbed â the United States Department of Agriculture will begin labeling the ground beef products it provides to schools so Americaâs schoolâs food service directors can make the decision as to whether they will include LFTB or not.

CASSELTON â Enderlin/Maple Valley softball player Abbie Tinjum approached her last at-bat in Thursdayâs Class B South Region championship game with one goal in mind â get the ball in play and get the final run needed in the 17-7 win over Central Cass.
âI was thinking that I just needed a base hit because we just need a runner in and I can probably make it to first and beat it out,â Tinjum said.
She did what she needed to, putting a ball on the ground in the infield as teammate Rylee Nudell sprinted from third to home, beating the throw.
Valley City State University junior Darien Moore won the NAIA national championship in the hammer throw Thursday in Marion, Ind. Moore finished with a throw of 200 feet, beating his closest opponent six feet. Moore will compete in the shot put, which takes place at 2 p.m. today. VCSUâs Amber Volanti missed placing in the javelin by under a foot.
VCHS softball advances in EDC tourney
The Valley City High School softball team avenged a loss from its season opener, beating Red River 5-1 in the first round of the Eastern Dakota Conference tournament.
Valley City High Schoolâs April Berntson has yet to see the state track and field meet from an athleteâs perspective. Bentson, a freshman, narrowly missed making the meet last year as an eighth grader, but instead went as a spectator.
This year, sheâll be making the trip for the right reasons.
Berntson clinched her spot in the state meet with a fifth place finish in the 1,600 meter run at the Eastern Dakota Conference regional meet last weekend in Fargo.
âIt was really awesome,â Berntson said. âI was just so excited and then everybody came and gave me a big hug.â
Jefferson Elementary School recently hosted a âSurvivorâ field day for students as a fundraising event, and it proved to be a success. Misti Kauffman, vice president of the PTO which helped establish the event, said it raised around $9,000 after expenses.
Kauffman said the event, which was organized with the help of the physical education department, was well-supported and will likely be done again next year.
CARRINGTON, N.D. â Tuesday marked an important moment in the history of Valley City and its neighbor to the north, Devils Lake.
âThis is a joint meeting of the Devils Lake Outlet Management Advisory Committee and also the Devils Lake Outlet Advisory Committee,â said Gov. Jack Dalrymple. âIf thatâs confusing you, youâre not the only one.â
The five candidates for the two open Valley City City Commission seats, and uncontested Barnes County Commissioners John Froelich and Cindy Schwehr, who are up for reelection this year, addressed the community at a candidate forum Tuesday night at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.
The forum, sponsored by the Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce and moderated by Mercy Hospital director Keith Heuser, was an opportunity for candidates to get their message out by answering questions from the community.

With summer just around the corner, things are beginning to heat up in the NBA playoffs, at least in the Eastern Conference. While it surely looks like the ageless San Antonio Spurs will face the up and coming Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals, things are not so clear out east. As the Chris Bosh-less Miami Heat try to survive the Indiana Pacers, the aging Big Three plus Rondo in Boston, look to sneak by the opportunistic Philadelphia 76ers.
BISMARCK (AP) â The City Council in Santa Cruz, Calif., has voted to finalize a deal with the Golden State Warriors that will enable the franchise to move its NBA Development League team from North Dakota.
The Dakota Wizards have called the state capital of Bismarck home for nearly two decades. The team was bought last year by the Warriors, an NBA team based about 70 miles north of Santa Cruz in Oakland, Calif., though the team plans a move to San Francisco.
Valley Cityâs Jessica Denholm looks to contribute to her team's success during regional high school softball today.
Enderlin/Maple Valley plays in the Class B South Region championship game against Central Cass at 5:30 p.m. at Tinta Tawa Park in Casselton. EMV clinched a spot in the Class B state tournament with a semifinal win Tuesday.
