Community Responds to Fire

When the Schonert family of Valley City's house was destroyed by fire Monday, they escaped with only the clothes on their backs. Now the family, which is living temporarily in a Valley City motel, needs the help of the community to recover from the tragedy; and so far the community is responding.

While the family's immediate needs are being met, they still need a place to live and will need to furnish a new home, said Reverend Jim Black of First Baptist Church. They will need everything, said Black, from furnishings to appliances and linens.

Loboe junior forward Anthony Olson and Raider senior center James Richman exchanged double-doubles in LaMoure on Tuesday night, but LaMoure/Litchville-Marion had a stronger fourth quarter to hold off Maple Valley for their third straight win, 51-49.

New Restaurant MO Eats to Open Friday

A new restaurant in Valley City is having its grand opening Friday. Located in the former Broken Spoke building at 100 Central Avenue South, MO eats serves common Midwest breakfast and lunch meals with a southern flair, said owner/operator Amanda Clark.

DOT Announcing EAS Contracts Soon

Federal Transportation Department officials have agreed to announce Essential Air Service contracts for North Dakota communities this week, and to possibly speed up transitions for Devils Lake and Jamestown, where air service is threatened, U.S. Sens. VCSU Presents Culture Shock Event

Valley City State University will host a presentation of "Culture Shock" at 8 p.m., Monday in Vangstad Auditorium on the Valley City State University campus, said Kari Stricklin, director of the VCSU student center and student activities. More in Wednesday's issue of the Times-Record.

VCSU Diversity and Inclusion Office to Host V-Day Event

The Valley City State University Diversity and Inclusion Office will host a reading of the play The Vagina Monologues, an episodic play by Eve Ensler based on interviews with female victims of violence and sexual abuse, on March 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Theatre 320 of McFarland Hall on the VCSU campus.

Participation is open to the public. People interested in participating in the event are invited to an informal group reading in Theatre 320 on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. For more information, contact Dr. Nadja Johnson at (701) 845-7306 or nadja.johnson@vcsu.edu.

A Farm Bill Compromise?

A new five-year Farm Bill could be close at hand, according to statements from U.S. Senators John Hoeven (R,) and Heidi Heitkamp (D-NPL). On the table is a 1,000-page bipartisan bill that cuts food stamps by 1 percent yet provides subsidies and other programs for farmers.
