State softball starts today
The Class A and B state high school softball tournaments start today at Elmwood Field in West Fargo.
Enderlin/Maple Valley enters the first Class B tournament as the top seed in the South Region and opens the tournament against Pembina County North and is scheduled to start 35 minutes after the conclusion of a 4:30 p.m. game.

The registration deadline is coming up for several Valley City Tennis Association programs.
Those who spent Memorial Day weekend at Lake Ashtabula’s East Crossing resort might have noticed some new faces and a fresh coat of blue paint on the walls of the Ashtabula Crossing restaurant.
The popular eatery, located less than 20 miles from Valley City, is under new ownership as of April 9. Mary Jean Cuffe, formerly of Breezy Point, Minn., her sister Patty Hoff, and Patty’s husband Scott, formerly of Perley, Minn., purchased the restaurant and bar from former owner Bob Kelly.
Tim Kadrmas will miss working with the kids and adult volunteers after he finishes this year – his final year – directing the Valley City Soap Box Derby, but after 18 years in the job he decided it was time.
“Looking at the faces of rookies coming down the track the first time you can see it is thrilling and exhilarating for them – you see the joy and fear and excitement in their faces.”
This year’s North Dakota Soap Box Derby takes place June 8 and 9 in Valley City.
The North Dakota Stockmen’s Association received an anonymous donation of $1,000 for its reward fund for information leading to the arrest of suspects involved in a pair of livestock shootings in Griggs County. The two incidents near Cooperstown involved the killing of four horses and three head of cattle. Authorities are also investigating a massacre of 14 cattle near Hankinson in Richland County.
Barnes County Sheriff Randy McClaflin said the occasional livestock shooting is not unheard of in the region.

The Valley City High School golf team is no stranger to state, but this year, a few Hi-Liners took a different route getting there.
Rather than qualify with the rest of the team, senior Nick Jensen and Ben Sorenson and freshman Jared Lentz all qualified individually during a meet last week in Wahpeton.
“We’ve never really done that before,” coach Buff Murray said. “It’s something that’s new.”
But an individual sport, the Hi-Liners are keeping the focus solely on team entering today’s Eastern Dakota Conference regional tournament at the Edgewood Public Golf Course in Fargo.

Valley City High School track and field coach Trevor Bakalar said the state meet in Bismarck over the weekend was full of ups and downs for his teams.
Although there was a bit of disappointment — namely, the Hi-Liners’ 4x100 and 4x200 girls relay teams and senior sprinter Molly Willson missing the finals — there was also the delight that three seniors got from placing in their final season.

1) Summer Tennis League: Monday nights at 7pm from June 4 - July 30 playing the World Team Tennis format; $25 entry fee. Open to junior/senior high players and adults.
2) Adult Beginner Lessons: Monday nights from 6-7pm in June (4,11,18,25); $20 entry fee; 4 players minimum.
Registration is due by June 1 to the Valley City Parks and Recreation office. Call 840-1727 for more information.
VCSU offering youth basketball camps

Valley City Eagles 2192 held its 43rd annual award banquet at the Aerie Club with Lorney Behm as the master of cememonies. The hometown builder was Dakota Plains Co-op with manager Ken Astrup who accepted the award and thanked the Eagles.
The Civic Service Award went to Fire Chief Gary Retterath and was presented by Mary Simonson, a former winner.
The Humanitarian Award was given to Lynell Gertin by Don Malec and Gloria VanDyke. Gertin saved Gloria while she choking at the bank.
A number of musical units, including VCHS, performed in Monday’s Memorial Day parade down Central Avenue in Valley City.
