July 28, 2014

A park ranger will be giving free instructions on canoeing and kayaking on the Sheyenne River 1 p.m., Aug. 9, at Fort Ransom State Park, said Cynthia Henderson, administrative assistant for the park. More in Monday's issue of the Times-Record.

Grafton Grounds Post 60 Comeback

Valley City Legion Post 60, guaranteed a spot in July 30’s Class A State Tournament in Wahpeton, N.D. after Thursday’s 6-5 Regional win over Harvey, secured the East No. 4 seed with Saturday’s 4-2 consolation quarterfinal loss to Grafton.

Post 60 entered consolation after falling 10-2 to Wahpeton on Thursday.

Grafton forced Wahpeton into a second title game with a 3-1 win, but Wahpeton held on, 8-5, in the finisher.

Wahpeton goes to State No. 1, Grafton No. 2 and Casselton No. 3.

SVCF Awards Community Grants

The Sheyenne Valley Community Foundation has awarded its first grants after forming in November of 2013, said Alicia Hoffarth, secretary/treasurer for the foundation board. More in Friday's issue of the Times-Record.

Public Invited to Discuss Floodwall Appearance Options

July 25, 2014

A public informational meeting to discuss options for floodwalls in the first phase of permanent flood protection in Valley City is planned for Tuesday, July 29 at 7 p.m. in the Skoal Room at the Valley City State University Student Center.

During the meeting, engineers from KLJ will present residents with several appearance options for floodwalls that will be located along College Street and Fifth Avenue Southwest. Valley City city officials will also be available to answer questions.

Post 60 Holds off Harvey for State Seed

Up 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Harvey Post 28’s Shawn Kourajian on second and Trevor Schimke on third in Thursday’s Class A East Regional opener, Chase Carpenter struck out Brian Fike on three straight pitches for the save, a matchup with top seed Wahpeton and a guaranteed spot in July 30’s State Tournament in Wahpeton, N.D.

“We rolled in like conquistadors,” said Legion Post 60 assistant coach Erick Counts of Post 60’s marauding spirit coming into Regionals. “[Valley City head coach Kyle] Roelfsema shaved his mustache like a conquistador.”

A two-semi accident on I-94 east of Valley City left both drivers with minor injuries Thursday morning.

VC Band Shell Moving

Work Crews from Carrington House Moving Wednesday began the process of removing the band shell in Valley City's City Park from its original foundation and moving it to a new foundation just north of the old location. More in Thursday's issue of the Times-Record.
