Kirin House to Open Friday

Kirin House, a Chinese buffet restaurant in Valley City, is set to open Friday, March 28. The restuarant will open at 11 a.m. and remain open until 9 or 9:30 p.m., which will be its regular hours seven days a week.
Kirin House, located in the old Pizza Hut building at 1155 West Main Street, is owned by Allen Chen, whose father, Yike Chen, owns Great Dragon in Jamestown.

Chen said his dad has a good reputation among both Jamestown and Valley City customers, and he wants to follow in his footsteps.

VC Native Who Acts in 'Fargo' TV Series to Appear at Viewing Party in Fargo

Local residents have the chance to watch the premiere of FX series "Fargo," in Fargo, where former Valley City resident and an actor in the series, Tom Musgrave, will make an appearance.

Microphone Replica Stolen from Museum

A replica of an antique microphone was recently stolen from the Barnes County Historical Society Museum.

Not a real microphone, the replica is actually made of a coffee pot heating element and two sink drain plugs fashioned to make it look like a microphone. An NBC logo on the device is also a replica, according to Wes Anderson, museum curator.

"It is fake and has no monetary value," said Anderson. The device may have been missing for a week.

Valley City Feels Flood Premium Pinch

There's a pretty view of the Sheyenne River from the top floor of Brandon Nadeau's two-story home, where he lives with his wife and two kids.
But that view is getting more expensive for the Nadeaus, who pay $2,800 a year in flood insurance. That's up 17 percent from 2013, which came after a 14 percent jump in 2012.

Valley City 5th-Grade Travel Boys Win Jamestown Spring Shootout

Valley City’s 5th-Grade Traveling Boys Basketball team took first place at Saturday’s Jamestown Spring Shootout.

Team members include Jared Eggermont, Drew Zaun, Carson McGough, Jack Ingstad, Blake Triebold, Derrek Diegel, Alex Thornton and Peyton Zaun, coached by Kevin Eggermont and Jason Thornton.

Viking Women's Coach Cathy Hanek Steps Down

Valley City State women’s basketball coach Cathy Hanek has resigned, VCSU announced Monday.

Hanek, who took over the Vikings last summer following longtime head coach Jill DeVries’s departure, steps down after coaching the Vikings for one season and compiling a 13-12 overall record. VCSU posted a third-place 3-5 record in North Star Athletic Association play.

A search for Hanek’s replacement will begin immediately, VCSU athletic
director Jack Denholm said.

Viking Baseball Beats Middlebury

March 25, 2014

A six-run Viking first inning and a solid pitching performance led Valley City State baseball to a 12-2 victory over Middlebury College on Sunday in Tucson, Ariz.

The win salvaged a split day for the Vikings, who earlier dropped an 8-0 contest to Oberlin College. VCSU is now 9-16 overall and 5-9 in their Spring Trip.

Lindsey White NSAA Softball Pitcher of the Week

Viking junior right-hander Lindsey White is the North Star Athletic Association Softball Pitcher of the Week.

White, of Menahga, Minn., posted a 3-1 record this week as she helped the Vikings to a 5-4 record over their last six days in Tucson, Ariz. White’s ERA for the week was a sparkling 1.29 as she allowed just five earned runs in 27 total innings.

Brady Anderson NSAA Baseball Player of the Week

Viking sophomore right fielder Brady Anderson is the North Star Athletic Association Baseball Player of the Week.

Anderson, a Jamestown native, batted .400 with a .575 slugging percentage and 10 runs driven in to help Valley City State to a 3-6 record last week in Tucson, Ariz. He posted 16 hits in nine games, including three doubles and two triples and five scored runs. His best game came in a 12-2 victory over Middlebury as he went 4-for-6 at the plate, scored a run and drove in four more.
