Lisa Blackâs reason for wanting to participate in this yearâs Relay for Life is more personal than for many people. Lisa, who will be conducting the luminary ceremony, has a number of family members whoâve been affected with cancer. But she is also a survivor of cancer herself.
Although this is her first year partaking in Relay for Life, Lisa said sheâd been interested before but was never around during the event.
The relay takes place 6 p.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday at Lokken Field.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) â North Dakota voters decided Tuesday to let the stateâs flagship university dump a controversial Fighting Sioux nickname that sparked threats of NCAA sanctions, ending â at least temporarily â a dispute simmering for decades that divided sports fans, alumni and even tribes.
The matter boiled over seven years ago when the University of North Dakota was placed on a list of schools with American Indian nicknames that the NCAA deemed hostile and abusive. Those colleges were told to dump the names or risk penalties against their athletic teams.
The Valley City Babe Ruth baseball team had its offense clicking on all cylinders in a double-header sweep of Edgeley Tuesday at Charlie Brown Memorial Field.
In two games that lasted a combined eight innings, Valley City scored 41 runs and had 28 hits. The day started with a 29-2 win in five innings in the first game and concluded with a 12-3 win in a three-inning second game.
âIts nice to see our offense continue to go like it has, and for the most part we havenât been relying on walks, we have been aggressive and collecting hits,â Valley City coach Lance Lukes said.

Post 60 wins, ties at Harwood
The Valley City Post 60 American Legion baseball team got a win and a tie in Harwood Monday.
Post 60 won 10-2 in the first game, but tied 4-4 in the second game, which ended after the second inning due to darkness.
In the first game, Chase Carpenter picked up the win on the mound and allowed only three hits. He also went 4-5 with two runs scored, two runs batted in and two stolen bases. Jaden Keys went 3-4 with two runs scored and Josh Gilbertson went 2-5 with one run, two RBI and two stolen bases.

BISMARCK, ND - The North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame (NDCHF) finalized plans for the 2012 induction weekend June 22-23, in Medora, with special recognition programs and receptions to acknowledge the current (and past) inductees in to the Hall of Honorees of the NDCHF â Center of Western Heritage & Cultures: Native American, Ranching and Rodeo.
Stephanie Mayfield has left her position as Executive Vice President at the Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce as of Friday.
To honor her service, the Chamber held a farewell open house Friday afternoon.
Mayfield is excited for her next adventure to stay at home with her 4-year-old daughter. She said her daughterâs daycare closed and instead of trying to find a new one, she decided to stay home with her.
Mayfield has been with the Chamber for more than two years; she started in March of 2010.
âOpinions donât matter, theyâre going to do what they want to do,â said one landowner as he left a public hearing on the Thordenskjold Drain reassessment.
On Oct. 18, 1953, the cornerstone was laid at the St. Paulâs Evangelical Lutheran Church in Valley City. Along with it, a time capsule was secured for a future congregation.
The Church opened the capsule following services on Sunday at St. Paulâs new location.
âTo be able to open it,â said the Rev. Mathew Sprunger, âit was really awesome.â
Sprunger will celebrate three years with the church in August, and said that the former pastor of the church, Donald E. Kolander, handpicked many of the articles that were placed in the capsule.

The Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce announces that this yearâs proceeds from the Annual âDuckinâ Down the Sheyenneâ rubber duck race will go to United Way of Barnes County.
The annual fundraiser will be held on Saturday, June 16 during the Rally in the Valley festivities.
Applications were reviewed by the Chamber Board on Friday, May 18.
There were many local youth-orientated organizations who applied. The United Way will use the funds to support the many worthy groups within Barnes County that they support.
