BC Wildlife Federation Gives Away Car

April 9, 2014

Dave Martin of Wheatland (right), shown here with Barnes County Wildlife Federation president Perry Kapaun, won a new car in the group's annual raffle Saturday. Martin has the option of choosing among several new vehicles or $15,000 cash. He will likely take the cash, Martin said.

Viking Baseball Swept by Jamestown

Viking baseball and Jamestown's Tuesday doubleheader at neutral Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. featured a 14-6 slugfest and a 3-0 pitcher's duel, from both of which the Jimmies came away the victors.

Valley City State is now 3-3 in North Star Athletic Association action and 12-21 overall. The Vikings plan to host Dakota State in a 4 p.m. Friday home opener.

Viking Softball Suffers Jamestown Sweep

April 9, 2014

Having weathered several early-season delays since returning from their Tucson, Ariz. Spring Trip, Viking softball kicked off their conference-season-opening doubleheader against the Jimmies Tuesday in the confines of Shelly Ellig Field.

Viking pitching persisted but Jamestown came away with the sweep, taking the first contest 4-1 and the second 3-2 in eight-inning fashion.

The Vikings host Mayville State in a noon-and-2 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.

Hi-Liner Girls Hoops Awards

Hi-Liner girls basketball held their end-of-the-season awards banquet on Sunday night following a campaign in which they broke the team record for most field goals with 523 in 24 games and set a team record for most steals with 300.

Grace Free Members to Perform Passion Play This Weekend

April 8, 2014

Members from Valley City's Grace Free Lutheran Church will perform their third annual Passion Play, which depicts the Easter story, for the community this weekend.

Director Tim Berntson said the play is put on by about 110 church members, who bring their talents together for the production. The show will be held Friday, April 11 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, April 12 at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, April 13 at 5 p.m. in the sanctuary of Grace Free Lutheran Church.

VCSU Acting Class Shoots Student Film with Actor Josef Cannon

Student actors in Jenni Lou Russi’s Advanced Acting class at Valley City State University have been working with Josef Cannon, a former VCSU student and current film actor in Los Angeles, to shoot a student film, “Hel U,” at various locations around campus and near the Hi-Line Bridge.

Meland Sets New VCSU Hammer Throw Record at Wisconsin - La Crosse

Valley City State Track & Field opened the outdoor season at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Saturday, from which sophomore Jessica Meland emerged with a school-record, 12th-place Hammer Throw toss of 44.85m (147 feet, 2 inches) that beat her former teammate, Amber Volanti, who set the old record in 2012.

Meland wasn’t the only hammer thrower to have a great day: freshmen Mary Roscoe (29.79m; 97 feet, 9 inches) and Kate Roscoe (29.64m; 93 feet, 11 inches) find themselves on the Viking All-Time Performance List after respective sixth- and seventh-place finishes.

Hi-Liner Track & Field Improving by Leaps and Bounds

Friday’s Eastern Dakota Conference Indoor Championships at North Dakota State were a promising display of Hi-Liner athleticism.

“Setting 12 new personal records at the EDC Indoor was a reputable way to end the indoor season,” Hi-Liner head coach Trevor Bakalar said.

“Bekah Peterson had another good meet and continues to look strong as we move to our outdoor season. Bekah placed fifth in her first 400m run of the season and set a new personal record with a time of 1:08.22. In the Triple Jump her distance of 31 feet, 3.5 inches placed her seventh.”
