VC Teen Dies in Sat. Accident

A Valley City teenager was killed early Saturday morning and another injured in an accident near Pingree, N.D.

According to the Associated Press, 18-year-old Miranda Stephens, the daughter of Russell and Stacy Stephens, was driving a pick-up truck and swerved to avoid a deer on a gravel road a few miles north of Pingree just after 1:30. The pickup entered the ditched and rolled, evicting the young woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Isaac Valenta, 19, was transported to Jamestown Regional Medical Center with non live-threatening injuries.

Rodriguez, Hi-Liners Run Over Falcons

If your defense builds it, Nate Rodriguez will break it.

Valley City’s 5-foot, 10-inch, 210-pound sophomore ran for 257 yards, scored three of his four rushing touchdowns in the first half and converted a two-point attempt in Friday’s 52-7 win at Maple Valley/ Enderlin’s Homecoming in arboreal Buffalo, N.D.

“[Rodriguez] is physically stronger than each and every one of us,” said Falcon head coach Nathan Hoots, who urged low, aggressive tackles at halftime. “We were dominating the line of scrimmage for the first eight minutes of the game, but that has not been the case since.”

Barnes County North Spikes Litchville-Marion/Montpelier

Five-foot, eight-inch sophomore setter Jayda Haugen's 18 assists and four digs led Barnes County North to Thursday's 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-13) home sweep of Litchville-Marion-Montpelier.

Abby Undem notched five kills, five aces and five digs, Sam Wieland seven kills, four digs and three aces, Allison Klein five kills and four digs, Shelby Brown five kills and a block, Laura Limesand two assists.

Junior Jacey Alber's seven kills and a block, junior Morgan Gentzkow's eight assists, senior Rhandi Larson's eight digs and sophomore Cheyenne Elsner's ace powered Litchville-Marion/Montpelier.

VCSU Homecoming Next Week

Valley City State University will have its homecoming next week. On Monday, students can get to know their homecoming court at 8 p.m. in Vangstad Auditorium in the VCSU Campus.

The king and queen will be crowned at coronation at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Vangstad Auditorium. The parade is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday down Central Avenue in Valley City, immediately following the Shriners parade, and the Vikings football team will take on Waldorf College at 1 p.m. Saturday.

VC Hosting 1st Shriners' Event

Valley City is hosting the El Zagal Shriners' 125th Anniversary Fall Ceremonial Oct. 3 through Oct. 5, the first time in Valley City's history it is doing so, said Brian Mindt, president of the Valley City Shriner organization. More in Friday's issue of the Times-Record.

Pumpkin Patch Open for Weekend

Preschoolers and kindergartners from Valley City got to pick their very own pumpkins Thursday afternoon at the Wittenberg Pumpkin Patch northeast of Valley City. Others looking for the fruit of fall can head out there this weekend.

The patch opened Thursday and is open Friday from 4-7 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 1-7 p.m. To get to the farm, take the Peak exit (296) on Interstate 94, drive 6.5 miles north and two miles west.

VCSU Students Harvest Fall Produce

Over 200 Valley City State University students spent Thursday morning harvesting thousand of pounds of fall produce – all of which was donated to the Great Plains Food Bank – at the rural Valley City farm of Dan Faust. More in Friday's Times-Record.

Red River, Davies Sweep Boys Tennis at Regionals; Singles, Doubles Tourneys Friday, Saturday

No. 8 Valley City, fresh off Monday’s 4-1 home play-in defeat of No. 9 Wahpeton, entered Thursday’s Eastern Dakota Conference Tournament at Grand Forks, N.D.’s Choice Health and Fitness, and fell 5-0 to No. 1 Red River in the first round and 5-0 to No. 5 Fargo Davies in consolation.

Red River beat No. 4 West Fargo, 4-1, then defeated Central, who will also advance to State, for the championship.
