Local Wheat Harvest Brighter Than Statewide

Barnes County small grains farmers are resting easy this week with most of the area's wheat and barley crops harvested and in good condition, unlike small grain producers in other parts of the state where the wet summer led to disease and other problems. More in Tuesday's Times-Record.

SNAPPED: Wahpeton Sticks Hi-Liner Junior Varsity with 1st Loss in 3 Years

When all else fails, throw it to Levi Nix.

Nix, the 6-foot, 4-inch sophomore quarterback, climbed the ladder, split two defenders at the 15-yard line and danced into the end zone in Wahpeton on Monday night, but Husky 5-foot, 9-inch sophomore quarterback Tyler Breuer and all his rowdy friends handed the junior varsity Hi-Liners their first loss in three years, 42-6.

“I don’t think they were that much better than us,” Hi-Liner coach Jim Breckheimer said. “But the wheels fell off.”

“They took us out of our gameplan,” Valley City coach Ty Allen said.

Mildred “Millie” Trapp

Mildred “Millie” Trapp age 101 of Pine City, MN, formerly of Valley City, ND, passed away on Sept. 14, 2014.
Mildred Geneva Hanson was born to Lewis Melvin and Mabel (Petersen) Hanson on Aug. 31, 1913 in Nome, ND. She married Herbert Trapp on Ap. 16, 1932. They resided in Lucca, ND until 1977 when they moved to Valley City, ND. After the death of her husband in 1995, Millie continued to live in Valley City until 2004 when she moved to Pine City, MN to live with her daughter.

Conni Bruse

Conni Layne Bruse was born on November 14, 1963, in Valley City, ND. She was the youngest of six children born to Marlyn and Estelle (Haarsager) Bruse of Litchville, ND. She grew up on the family farm south of Litchville, where she developed a love of writing and drawing, and a very special bond with nature and animals. Whether it was riding her horse, Cheyenne, or playing with a new batch of baby kittens, all animals held a special place in Conni’s heart. She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Litchville and graduated from Litchville High School in 1982.

Wesley Alan Dibbern

Wesley Alan Dibbern, 84, died September 3, 2014 in Lisle, IL. He was the dear son of the late Elmer and Maude Dibbern; loving brother of Mary Jean Dibbern (Jack Wesley) Benner and the late David Dibbern; fond uncle and great uncle of many nieces and nephews; cherished cousin and friend of many.
A funeral service was held September 6, 2014 at Brookdale Plaza in Lisle, IL. A graveside service will be held in Woodbine Cemetery, Valley City, ND on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 10:00 AM. Pastor David Hartson of the Congregational United Church of Christ will officiate.

Former VCSU Student Sentenced to More Than 30 Years

A former Valley City State football player was sentenced Thursday to more than 30 years in prison for murder and attempted murder.

Cederic Chappell, Jr., 22, was convicted in August of aiding and abetting second-degree murder for the benefit of a gang in the death of Willie James Smith, III, and attempted second-degree murder in the wounding of another man at a Minneapolis, Minn. nightclub.

Members of the Valley City State University presidential search committee narrowed a list of 38 applicants for new president of VCSU down to “eight or nine” during a four-hour meeting Thursday in Valley City. More in Monday's issue of the Times-Record.

Jefferson's 'Spinami' is Popular

Money raised by students at Valley City's Jefferson Elementary School at last spring's Field Day Bingo Fundraiser has been used to buy the school's newest piece of playground equipment – the “Spinami,” said Misti Kaufmann, vice president of Valley City's Jefferson Elementary School PTO. Riding to Remember

Turnout was big for the 9/11 tribute ride Sunday. Sponsored by the local chapter of the Red Knights Motorcycle Club, the event was held as a way to honor the memories of the men and women who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Money raised during the event will go to local fire and accident victims.
