Ukestad, Marden, Fredrickson Sign with VCSU Football

Valley City State head football coach Dennis McCulloch announced on Thursday the addition of three more high school freshmen who have signed letters of intent to attend VCSU and play football for the Vikings this fall: wide receiver/defensive back Tyler Ukestad of Jamestown, wide receiver Curtis Marden of Powers Lake, N.D., and linebacker Riley Fredrickson of Wasilla, Alaska.

VCSU Spring Baseball Openers Saturday, Sunday

Valley City State baseball opens the 2014 spring season this weekend with Saturday and Sunday doubleheaders at Midland University in Fremont, Neb.

Games begin at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. both days.

The Saturday forecast is iffy, calling for temperatures near 35 degrees and mostly sunny skies. The forecast for Sunday is sunny with a high near 58 degrees.

VCSU's Brittany Lehner First Team All Conference

Valley City State senior forward Brittany Lehner was named First Team All Conference Tuesday night by the North Star Athletic Association league office.

A 5-foot-10-inch forward from Watertown, S.D., Lehner is one of five players to receive First Team honors in women’s basketball after averaging 18 points and 7.2 rebounds per game this season and shooting 59.1 percent from the field, the fourth-best shooting percentage in NAIA Division II basketball.

Dogs Visit Winter Show Wednesday

Diane Baarstad, left, and Kathy Martin, center, of the Sheyenne Valley Friends of Animals, and Sophia Hansen show dog Meeka some love Wednesday at the North Dakota Winter Show's dog day.

The SVFA and Jamestown-based rescue group Prairie Paws Rescue were at the Winter Show with dogs available for adoption alongside a dog stunt team, Canine Stars, which performed three shows throughout the day.

Barnes County Commissioners are encouraging small Barnes County communities to establish house numbers and street names or numbers in an attempt to make it easier for first responders and fire departments to respond to emergency calls. More in Thursday's issue of the Times-Record.

Open Door: End the R-Word

The Open Door Center wants to spread the word to end the R-word. Wednesday, residents and staff at the Open Door Center in Valley City donned shirts saying "Shred the R-Word" in an effort to raise awareness about the hurtfulness surrounding the word "retarded."
