Farm Burglary Case Closes

February 26, 2014

A conviction in Barnes County District Court last week marked the end of a case that began with a string of farmstead burglaries in 2012. Broc Allen Buytaert was sentenced in Barnes County District Court last week for his role in the robberies; previously Steven Lee Hovland and April Robyn Kapaun were sentenced for the same crimes. Winter Woes for Rural Water Customers

Rural water customers should protect against frozen water pipes, but with caution.
According to Perry Kapaun, manager of Barnes Rural water, with cold temps this winter and little insulation from snow, ground frost is deeper than usual meaning water pipes could freeze causing a litany of problems for homeowners.

Jefferson Counselor Recognized by National Organization

Jefferson Elementary School's guidance counselor Judi Hillier was recently recognized as a semi-finalist at the American School Counselor Association school counselor of the year program at a black tie gala in Washington, D.C.
Hillier, who's been a counselor at the Valley City Public School district for 33 years, received a certificate at Union Station in D.C. Friday, Jan. 31 among five finalists and 31 semi-finalists from across the country.

USDA Announces $3M For Pollinator Health

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service will provide close to $3 million in technical and financial assistance for interested farmers and ranchers to help improve the health of bees, which play an important role in crop production. Viking Fish Fry Wednesday

Valley City State’s Booster Club will host the first Viking Fish Fry, 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Valley City VFW Club.

Tickets are $15 and include a meal of fish and fixin’s along with entry for numerous door prizes. All proceeds go to VCSU athletic scholarships.

Contact a VCSU Booster Club member or call (701) 845-7161 to purchase your tickets. The Fish Fry replaces the annual Wild Game Feed hosted in previous years.

VCHS Receives Weighty Donations

Valley City High School, with the help of the Hi-Liner Booster Club’s Feb. 20 pledge to match $10,000 of the estimated $20,000-$25,000 cost, has launched a fundraiser project to retro-fit the Hi-Liner Strength and Conditioning Center.

Wahpeton Treys Sink Hi-Liner Boys

February 26, 2014

Hi-Liner junior forward Jared Lentz scored nine points and freshman forward Levi Nix eight more against Class A No. 5-ranked Eastern Dakota Conference rival Wahpeton on Tuesday night, but the Huskies knocked down 13 three-pointers en route to a 71-36 win.
