500-600 Expected at VCSU Science Olympiad

Valley City State University will host a Regional Science Olympiad for teams of high school and
junior high students on campus Thursday, March 28.
Twenty-three high school teams and 16 junior high teams―comprising 500 to 600 students―
will compete at VCSU.

Easter Egg Hunts, Breakfasts Planned

Valley City area churches plan special events for Easter week, including Easter egg hunts and Easter breakfasts.
Most events are free and open to the public, with some requesting free will donations for food.

Jolly for 66 Years

What started as a birthday club in Valley City 66 years ago still has a founding member plus eight others.
According to Colleen Vannurden, a member of the Jolly Dozen Birthday Club, a group of women who meet regularly to socialize and play cards, Ethel Heckmen founded the club in September 1947 along with six other ladies.
The women continue to meet regularly for cards and visiting.

MBB: Viking Men Receive Votes in Final NAIA Poll

After a 20 plus win season and the first ever NAIA Division II National Tournament berth, the Valley City State University Men's Basketball team finished the 2012-13 season one spot outside of the top 25 poll.

The Vikings received 42 votes for the final poll, placing them one spot out of the top 25, the highest team not ranked in the final poll of the season.

After being ranked in the poll much of the season, the Vikings received an at large bid to their first ever NAIA Division II National Tournament. A first round loss to Indiana Southeast finished the Vikings season at 21-9.

VCSU Scholarship Auction Set For April 19

Kim Hesch, Assistant Director of Advancement at VCSU, said the 19th annual VCSU Scholarship Auction has been set for Friday, April 19 at the Valley City Eagles Club.
Hesch said this year's theme of Get Wild in the VCSU Jungle “has auction committee members working hard to create a fun and wild atmosphere at the Eagles Club for the auction. The scholarship auction is our single biggest event in terms of generating scholarship dollars and it seems to get bigger each year,” said Hesch, “We sold more than 550 tickets to the event last year and are on target to do the same this year.”

Straus Mall Owners Continuing Renovations of Structure

New fabric awnings were installed over first floor windows of Valley City's Straus Mall Monday, part of continuing work by mall owners to renovate the structure.
At present the mall houses three businesses. Exterior work has included installing the awnings, plastering, painting and installing new windows. More in Tuesday's issue of the Times-Record.

The City of Valley City is testing its emergency sirens today.

Police Attend Domestic Violence Training

Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson recently attended training on domestic violence. The training was a coordinated effort to bring together entities that respond to domestic violence crises.
Part of the training included learning about North Dakota law as it applies to domestic violence for Thompson who is from Nevada. As time and finances allow, Thompson would like to send each of his officer to the training.
In 2011, 5,159 incidents of domestic violence were reported to crisis intervention centers in North Dakota. Of those, 50 percent were reported to law enforcement.

Wednesday Crash Now a Fatality

Two people have died as a result of injuries received in a one-car rollover accident on I94 west of Valley City on Wednesday.
Tiffany Przybycien, 23, driver of the pickup involved in the crash, died at the Sanford Hospital in Fargo on Saturday. Her passenger, Kyle Truckey, 22, died at the Sanford Hospital in Fargo on Friday.

Marion Man Dies in Crash

March 26, 2013

A one-vehicle crash has claimed the life of a Marion man.
Merle Haakenson, 40, was killed early Saturday when the truck in which he was a passenger rolled on a gravel road 1.5 miles west of Marion.
The pick-up truck, driven by Angela Haakenson, 43, of Marion, was traveling westbound on the snow-covered road when the driver lost control.
