Jefferson Coming To Valley City

June 6, 2013

Thomas Jefferson will be coming to North Dakota Oct. 15 in the body of North Dakota historian Clay Jenkinson, who portrays the famous third U.S. president each week on Prairie Public Radio.
Jenkinson is being brought to town by Valley City State University's “What In The World Is Going On?” series, the Barnes County Historical Society and the Valley City Public Schools.

9-1-1 Dispatch, One More Roadblock

Barnes County's move of the 9-1-1 dispatch center hit another snag recently. According to Valley City Building and Fire Inspector Dave Andersen, Barnes County needs to obtain a building permit and have an asbestos inspection done before remodeling space in the Barnes County Courthouse basement for a new dispatch center.

VC Schools Recommend Washington Principal

The interviewing committee for the elementary building principal position plans to recommend Chad Lueck to the Valley City Public Schools school board to receive a contract to be the new principal at Washington Elementary School.
Superintendent Dean Koppelman said in an email Wednesday that Lueck is originally from Lidgerwood, N.D. and graduated from Valley City State University with a major in Elementary Education.  He received his Master's Degree from Tri-College University in Educational Leadership.

Class Helps Local Cancer Patients Look, Feel Better

Local women who are faced with appearance-related side effects of cancer treatments are fortunate to have Look Good Feel Better classes available right here in Valley City. Each month classes are held at the Sheyenne Care Center where Terry Moritz, a local licensed cosmetologist, and eight-year volunteer with the American Cancer Society offers her time and professional talent to women who attend the class.

Rhubarb Run Fundraiser Saturday: Looking for Rhubarb Donors

St. Catherine Parish Catholic Daughters of the Americas are holding their annual Rhubarb Run Fundraiser on Saturday, June 8.

Elevate Within Announces Gingerbread Competition

June 5 is National Gingerbread Day, and in recognition, Elevate Within Peer Group would like to announce a gingerbread design competition in late November.
The competition, which has several sponsors, will consist of an adult and student competition. Entry will be free and open to anyone, according to Reverend Jennifer Pickard of Elevate Within.
Winners of the competition will be announced and prizes awarded on December 7 at the annual Holiday Extravaganza in Valley City. Regulations and additional information will be available in September.

VC, Hubmac Pleased With Stabilization

Valley City officials and George Gaukler said Tuesday they are pleased with a Sheyenne River bank stabilization project on Main Street adjacent to the Marketplace and the Old Elks Apartments.
Said Valley City Mayor Bob Werkhoven, “It's working as planned, and working real well. I was watching it when the river was at 2,000 cubic feet per second, and when it (the water speed and depth) dropped down, it still looked good.”

Local Mud Runner Brings Interest to Community

As the owner of two pickup trucks customized with the ability to run through very deep mud, local resident HJ Norman wanted his hometown to have the same experience he and his family does when they play in the mud. Next week, the Valley City resident has the chance to show what his trucks are made of and help the North Dakota Winter Show run its very first mud bogs during Rally in the Valley community days weekend June 15-16.
The mud bogs will be held Saturday, June 15 at 4 p.m. Gates open at 2 p.m., and there will be concessions of food and beer.

Valley City's Sheyenne Valley Soap Box Derby Saturday

For the first time Valley City's Sheyenne Valley Soap Box Derby planned for Saturday will be run by the new Sheyenne Valley Soap Box Derby Club.
People can support the club financially this year by buying ducks for the “Ducking Down the Sheyenne” raffle. On June 15 during the annual Rally in the Valley event, "ducks" will be dropped off the footbridge at City Park. The top 10 ducks will receive Chamber or Commerce bucks. The first place winner will receive $500 worth of Chamber bucks.

Fire Heavily Damages Valley City Apartment

June 4, 2013

The occupant of an apartment on Central Avenue South received minor burns and the apartment was heavily damaged in a fire early Sunday morning, said Valley City Fire Chief Gary Retterath.
Valley City firefighters responded to the fire at 3:42 a.m., and discovered the fire in an upstairs apartment in a bedroom of the rental house.
