Barnes County Ranks High For Health

Barnes County ranked high among 53 North Dakota counties in the 2013 County Health Rankings and Roadmaps for 2013.
City County Health Director Theresa Will said, “We have been in the top 20 percent since they started (research) in 2010. (The high ranking) is not really surprising – it would have been surprising if we declined a lot.”

Gas Prices Fall in ND

North Dakota gasoline prices have fallen on ;average by 10 cents per gallon a week ago and 51 cents from the record high average of $4.24 per gallon set May 22, according to information from North Dakota American Automobile Association.
A sampling of Valley City gasoline prices Wednesday revealed super unleaded being sold at $3.62.9 and $3.69.9 per gallon, and regular unleaded at $3.70.9 and $3.77.9.

LaMoure County Theatre Invites the Neighbors

The LaMoure County Summer Musical Theatre will soon premiere its production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat in beautiful Memorial Park in Grand Rapids, and everyone is welcome. The musical is based on the Biblical story about Joseph and a multi-colored coat given to him by his father, Jacob. It includes a cast from Marion to Oaks and is family-friendly. Fireworks at Lake Ashtabula Set for July 5

The Lake Ashtabula Fireworks Association is planning another big show on the lake next Friday, and they're still taking donations to help pay for the ever-increasing cost of fireworks.
The fireworks association anticipates that boats will fill the water and people will line the shores Friday, July 5, at the Ashtabula Crossing at dusk while the sky lights up for the annual show.

Elsie Keys Retiring After 30 Years

June 26, 2013

Elsie Keys, 86, retires this week from the Valley City-Barnes County Public Library after 30 years.
Her final day will be Saturday. Fellow library worker Irma Ness said part of Keys' reason for retiring is because her daughter has a lake cabin, "and she likes to spend time at the lake."

After The Flood: It’s Cleanup Time

Safety is important when cleaning up messes left by heavy rainfall Thursday evening.
Once Barnes County and Valley City residents finish pumping out basements and other low areas, they must start cleanup operations. But before diving into the job, people should check to make sure their tetanus (Tdap) shots are current.

Contractors: Check 'Em Out

Last week, after Mother Nature dumped up to seven inches of rain on the area, a lot of damage was left behind in the wake. Unscrupulous contractors like to swoop in on victims of natural disasters and perform repairs that may be sub-par or done with shoddy materials. If a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. VCSU, VCHS Damaged in Flood

Valley City High School and Valley City State University both received significant damage from Thursday's flash flood. Both institutions have filed claims with North Dakota Fire and Tornado Fund, a property insurance company, and are waiting to see if the damage will be paid for.

Valley City Public Schools superintendent Dean Koppelman said the junior and senior high school received about $60,000 worth of damage, mainly to carpet and ceiling tiles. He said a quick response and people available to help aided in mitigating much of the damage.

Basement Cleaning Kits Offered

June 25, 2013

Barnes County has free kits available to help residents safely clean up basements flooded by Thursday's nearly 7-inch rainfall.

The kits include a bucket, a mop head, gloves, garbage bags, squeegees, antiseptic cleaner, bleach, laundry detergent, safety goggles, sponges and rags.

Kits can be picked up at the emergency services office in the Barnes County Highway Department building on Airport Road from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Call 845-6678 for information.

Practice Fireworks Safety July 4

June 25, 2013

Beginning Thursday, Valley City will likely be filled with the sights and sounds of fireworks, with the pyrotechnics being legal for sale from then through July 5.
Valley City Fire Department Chief Gary Retterath said Monday fireworks can be sold from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. those days, and those buying them must be at least 12 and be able to prove the age. Retterath said most sellers require a note testifying to the age signed by a parent.
