Myers Wins 5 Major Awards

July 31, 2013

Rural Kathryn's Kendra Myers ended up with four grand champion awards and one reserve grand champion award at the 2013 North Dakota State Fair.
Myers, who turns 11 Monday, and her purebred Simmental heifer “Daisy,” were named Grand Champion in the Junior Simmental Show, Grand Champion Simmental in the North Dakota Junior Points Show Association, and Grand Champion in the 4-H show.

UPDATE: Names Released in SUV Rollover

July 31, 2013

Valley City police say the 2005 Honda CRV that rolled following a 2-vehicle accident Monday around 5 p.m. was driven by Duane Huibregtse, 70. The SUV rolled after being struck on the passenger side by a 2000 Volkswagon Beetle, driven by Karen Bruyea, 48.
The vehicles collided at the intersection of Third Avenue and Second Street Northeast.
Bruyea was transported to Mercy Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Statewide Crime Statistics Released

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem Tuesday released North Dakota’s crime statistics for 2012. The annual Crime Report is compiled from information reported by local law enforcement agencies across the state.
“Based on our experience here (in Barnes County), our numbers are up from last year, and last year's numbers were up from the previous year,” said Barnes County States Attorney Lee Grossman.

An Awesome Race: Local Girl Places Third in International Soap Box Derby

When Valley City High School Junior Annie Hart, 16, volunteered to drive an unused soap box car in the local competition earlier this summer, she never dreamed she would win a chance to compete in the international competition in Akron, Ohio, let alone place third in the world. Before that first race in Valley City, she had never raced in a soap box derby.
Annie placed third in the super stock division at the All American Soap Box Derby at Derby Downs in Akron Ohio last week competing against 121 racers from all over the world.

Man Fires Shots at Dogs in VC

July 30, 2013

Shots were fired early Sunday morning as a Valley City man claimed to feel threatened by a pair of dogs. The man, who fired several shots at the pit bulls, reported the incident.
Valley City police received a call from Nathan Preston, 24, of 718 Second Street SW, Valley City, Preston informed the communications operator that he was attacked by two pit bulls and, feeling threatened, he fired several rounds at the approaching dogs.

4–H Excels At ND State Fair

A total of 10 Barnes County youths either won champion or reserve champion awards in the 4-H static exhibits at the North Dakota State Fair in Minot.
Static exhibits are exhibits that do no move and are usually submitted by individuals.
“We had quite a few reserve and grand champions,” said Randy Grueneich, Barnes County extension agent, Monday.
“We are pleased when our kids do well at the state. We do interview judging at the county level, at the state level just projects are judged,” Grueneich said.

VCSU Math Prof Excited About Plans

Curt Hill, a Valley City State University math professor who will be teaching software engineering starting this fall, is excited about plans creating a home for computer systems and software engineering in McFarland Hall.
Monday Hill said faculty offices and a receptionist area will be clustered together with a lounge in front “for students to work.”

Tree Disease Can Be Prevented By Acting Early

Trees provide beauty and shade to yards, city forester David Dunham said, but they often succumb to disease and must be chopped down. Fortunately, tree disease can be prevented by acting early.
Dunham said tree diseases for all species can be prevented at the start by avoiding planting the same trees right next to each other.
"The key is diversification," he said, explaining that planting a variety of tree species in an area prevents disease from spreading so easily.

SUV Flips in 2-Vehicle Accident

A Honda CRV rolled after being t-boned by a Volkswagon Beetle at the intersection of Second Street and Third Avenue Northeast Monday around 5 p.m. Valley City police believe there were no serious injuries.
