Heitkamp Visits VCSU

August 22, 2013

U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D-NPL) visited Valley City State University where she met last Thursday with the public along with VCSU president Dr. Steve Shirley as well as the presidents of Jamestown College and Mayville State University.
The purpose of Heitkamp's visit was to discuss student loan reform and a new law recently signed into law by President Barack Obama.

Clancy Keeps Active as Volunteer

Rita Clancy keeps things interesting during coffee breaks for volunteers at Valley City's Nearly-Nu Store.
The 85-year-old Valley City resident has been volunteering at the thrift shop for about 20 years.
Monday afternoon, fellow volunteers celebrated her 85th birthday with a cake.

Fence Co. Punctures Gas Line

August 20, 2013

A post hole digger being used by a fence company punctured a natural gas line near the FEI Inc. building at 913 14th Street SW, ,just south of Interstate 94 Tuesday afternoon in Valley City, causing firefighters and police to evacuate the business and block off the road for about a half hour.
The Valley City Fire Department got word of the gas leak shortly after 1 p.m., and police and firefighters began leaving the scene about 1:45 p.m.

BC Asking for 9-1-1 Assistance from City

Barnes County has requested financial assistance from Valley City for operation of the 9-1-1 dispatch center for which the county took over day-to-day operations just last week.
According to an e-mail from Barnes County Emergency Manager Kim Franklin to members of the Valley City Commission and other city officials, the county believes the city should pay toward the system.
"As Valley City is more than 50 percent of the dispatch calls, I think that they should still be willing to pay towards the system and help ensure the safety of all citizens," Franklin wrote.

Rural Tower City Man Takes First at Minot

Rural Tower City's Travis House took both first and second place in the percentage horse pull at the North Dakota State Fair in July.
Interviewed Monday, House, 28, said his new team of Belgian draft horses took first place, while his experienced team took second spot.

North Dakota Chaplains Discuss Prophetic Voice at NDCA Conference

This year the North Dakota Chaplains’ Association celebrated its 35thanniversary during its annual conference Aug. 1 and 2 at Maryvale in Valley City.
The event featured Dr. Joan Henriksen-Hellyer, Ph.D., who discussed the chaplains’ role as prophets and professionals in clinical ethics. Hendricksen-Hellyer is the coordinator of the ethics consult service at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.

Lawsuit Plaintiff Tells His Side

"I feared for my life, I feared for my girlfriend's life, there was nothing else I could do different," said Nathan Preston, a man who fired several shots at a pair of pit bull dogs from a .40-caliber handgun last month at his home in Valley City.
Preston has filed a $25,000 suit in small claims court claiming that his right to defend himself has been violated because police confiscated two of his weapons after the incident, even though he only fired one of them that evening, he said.

Valley City Man Named to Railroad Hall of Fame

Valley City resident Lloyd A. Nelson will be honored Aug. 25 in Mandan, when he will be inducted into the North Dakota Railroad Hall of Fame in a special program at the North Dakota Railroad Museum.
The public is invited to the museum from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. for Railroad Days, a day full of special activities.

One BC Truck Crash Victim Identified

August 19, 2013

The name of one of the drivers killed in a two-semi crash near Litchville last week has been released by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
Allen Tofsrud, 46, of Leeds, N.D., died on the scene Wednesday after the crash that claimed the lives of both drivers.

Area Teen Involved in Deadly Crash

August 19, 2013

Two Litchville-Marion students, one from Litchville and one from Dickey, were passengers in a one-car crash that killed the driver, Micah Wagner, 18, of Fullerton.
Wagner, along with four passengers – Dylan Eull, 21, of Verona; Daniel Haugen, 18 of LaMoure; and two minors, ages 15 and 14 – were northbound on a gravel road about 2.5 miles south of LaMoure. Wagner lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle entered the east ditch, went through a fence, into a pasture and overturned, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
