Dakota Plains Seeks Merger With CHS

Valley City-based Dakota Plains Cooperative will ask its farmer stockholders to approved a full merger with CHS Inc., the nation's largest farmer cooperative later this month or in October, said general manager Ken Astrup.
Said Astrup Monday, “We started the process early last spring, and in early August the board decided to propose to stockholders a full merger.”

VCSU Frosh Go Through Orientation

New freshmen at Valley City State University were introduced to college life and living on their own during orientation Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Students were very visible Monday morning, as they participated in a scavenger hunt, designed as a casual way to get to know Valley City, said Greg Vanney, director of marketing and communications.

VCSU Competes at Red Raider Classic

A weekend of tough matches started just that way Friday for Valley City State volleyball.

The Vikings dropped a pair of three-game matches at the Northwestern College Red Raider Classic, falling to both Morningside and Dordt College on Friday.

Morningside defeated the Vikings 25-21, 25-11 and 25-16. Dordt College, an NAIA Top 25 Poll team, knocked off the Vikings 25-10, 25-18 and 25-18.

Alley Theroux and Kelsey Labodi led the Viking attack with 11 kills each between the two matches.

Heat Alters Hi-Liner Sports Schedules

High regional temperatures have forced Valley City High School athletics to adjust its fall sports schedule for the safety of its student athletes, but no activities have been cancelled.

Precautions include moving practices to mornings or late evenings to avoid the observed high heat indexes of the day, changing the start time of competitions to avoid daytime highs, modifying the length of outside practices, moving junior high volleyball practices from the north and south gyms to the Hi-Liner Activity Center.

VCPS Cancels School Wednesday; Early Dismissal Thursday and Friday

Due to the heat and humidity in buildings, Valley City Public Schools is making some changes to the school times this week.

There will be no school on Wednesday, Aug. 28, Bryan Kriewald, technology coordinator, said in an email Monday afternoon.

School will start at regular time on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 29 and 30 but will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m. those days.

The Jefferson School picnic tonight and the Back to School Night at Washington Elementary on Thursday are still on as scheduled.

Mabel Miller Celebrates 90th Birthday

Valley City resident Mabel Miller celebrated her 90th birthday Aug. 3 at the Legacy Place.

Library Increasing Internet Access

The Valley City Barnes County Public Library is going modern, starting a new catalog interface readers will be able to reach from the library homepage.
Library Director Steve Hammel said Friday, “Patrons will be able to log on and look at their account. They will be able to renew online, look at their account, see what's out and when it's due.”

VC Man Arrested for Possession of Child Porn

A Valley City man was arrested early Friday for possession of child pornography.
According to a press release from Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson, the VCPD was contacted by a man who alleged the man was in possession of child pornography. After interviewing the woman, and investigation was started.

Dog Shooter Arrested

Editor’s note: with few exceptions, the Valley City Times-Record’s policy is to not print the names of those accused or arrested of crimes until that person has been convicted.
A Valley City man who fired several shots at two pit bull dogs he thought were going to attack him was arrested Thursday by the Valley City Police for disorderly conduct.
The accused, 24, was taken to the Barnes County Correctional Center where his bond was later posted by District 24 Representative Dwight Kiefert (R).

Hi-Liner Girls Take 3rd in Jamestown

The Valley City High School cross country season was off to a hot start at the Jamestown "Orr"iginals Cross Country Meet at Centennial Forest Course, with temperatures in the high 80’s and humidity to match. The young Hi-Liners performed well in the overall competition of 15 teams, especially with many appearing in their first-ever meet.
