No Injured Children in Bus Accident

December 16, 2013

An accident between a sport utility vehicle and a school bus Monday resulted in no injuries among bus passengers and only a minor injury to a passenger in the SUV.
According to Sergeant David Swenson of the Valley City Police Department, the accident happened just after noon at Main Street and Seventh Avenue in Valley City when a Head Start bus carrying five children rear-ended the SUV.

Al Trader Rings Bell Every Year

Al Trader, Sr. has rang the bell for Barnes County's Salvation Army every year for the past 20 years, he estimates. The Valley City man began ringing the bell after he retired the second time and looks forward to it every year.

Barnes County Tournament: Loboes Take 2nd, Rebels 4th, Bison 8th

December 16, 2013

Barnes County Boys Basketball Tournament No. 1 seed and defending Class B State Tournament champion Milnor defeated returning Class B State fourth-place finisher and Tournament No. 2 seed LaMoure/Litchville-Marion, 63-45, in Saturday's championship game at Valley City State's W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.

Hi-Liner Wrestling Wins Sertoma Consolation Championship

Hi-Liner wrestling fell 57-12 to Turtle Mountain but beat Central Cass 46-25, edged Minot, 43-36, and beat Eastern Dakota Conference rival and host Grand Forks Central, 38-26, for fifth place of 16 teams to win the consolation championship at the Sertoma Tournament in Grand Forks on Friday and Saturday.

Lady Hi-Liners Drive Past Bismarck St. Mary's

Lady Hi-Liner senior forwards Dierra Diegel, Danica Diegel, Madison Taylor and senior guard Jessica Denholm scored double-digit points on Saturday afternoon as Valley City attacked the basket and defeated Bismarck St. Mary's, 69-41, for the Hi-Liners' second win in three opening-week games.

Mitten Tree in VC

Valley City Cares, a local, independent charity organization is sponsoring a mitten tree in Valley City for the 36th year. Run by Rosie Larson and her family, the tree helps provide those in need with mittens, boots, scarves, toys and other donated items during the holiday season.
The tree is located at First Community Credit Union, where people can drop off donations. Other drop-off sites are at Miller Motors, The Mane Tamer, MarketPlace Foods, and Barnes County Extension Office. Donations can also be dropped off at Larson's house by calling (701) 845-0688.

Donations Sought for Fire Victims

A fund has been established for an Oriska family who lost everything in a house fire last week.
On Dec. 4, everyone was gone when the home Becky Sundstrom shared with Andrew Gubrud and daughter Nellie was destroyed by fire. While the family was out of harm's way, their four dogs – Daisy, Hector, Peanut and Astrid – all perished in the blaze.
Sundstrom's co-workers at First Community Credit Union have set up a fund for the family. Donations can be sent to First Community Credit Union, 149 Fourth Street Northeast or P.O. Box 36, Valley City, ND 58072.

Deputies Work To Brighten The Season

For the third year in a row, the deputies and reserve deputies of the Barnes County Sheriff Office are working to make the holiday season brighter for families or individuals that have had a major tragedy in the last year through its Secret Santa Program, said Chief Deputy Don Fiebiger.
