May 15th
Jerry Weigel of North Dakota Game and Fish Tuesday stocked the public fishing pond at Valley City's National Fish Hatchery with trout.
Weigel said he stocked the pond with 350 trout.

Slightly more than a year after Valley City's $21 million upgrade to its water plant has been fully operational the facility is working well, said Wade Heche, Valley City Water Treatment Plant Manager.
“With the water treatment plant in full-fledged operation, it's running as it should with periodic glitches. Since it's been a year now, myself and Sherry Keys (the two plant operators) are fairly comfortable with the whole system,” Heche said.

An early morning storm left about 1,500 residences without power in Valley City Monday after power poles and trees were knocked about by strong winds. At least one driver reported pitch blackness from blowing dirt before his semi was blown into the median.

Valley City Public Schools administrators and teachers recognized students and staff during the Valley City Public School board's regular meeting Monday.
Among other recognitions, junior and senior high math teacher Trevar Hansen recognized four students who competed in the local, regional and state Mathcounts competition, a math competition for sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders. As a team, the students took first place in the region, and seventh-grader Evan Haglund just returned from the national competition in Washington, D.C. where he competed.

As of Monday evening, there were still three Valley City community garden plots available for rent for the season, said Ellen Bjelland, Garden Steering Committee chair and Barnes County extension agent.
Bjelland said plots are $30 each plus a $10 deposit. The deposit is to ensure gardeners will keep up their plot, weed regularly, and clean it up in the fall.

Several Valley City seasonal road projects are getting underway this week, said Chad Petersen, an engineer with KLJ, Valley City's engineering firm.
Work planned for this year includes street reconstruction and storm sewer work, shared use asphalt paths at Pioneer Park and retaining walls.

Ellen Bjelland, North Dakota State University's Barnes County extension agent, is moving to a different county. Her last day in Barnes County will be May 31.
Bjelland started as the family and consumer sciences extension agent in the county 15 years ago, and while she enjoyed her time here, she has decided to go back home. She recently inherited her family farm near Minot, and she'll live there and work as an extension agent for Ward County.

Valley City Public Schools honored 10 retirees, the teacher of the year, and several employees for years of service during its annual awards banquet Wednesday.
Kristi Shanenko, junior and senior high English teacher, received teacher of the year award.

May 10th
An art show displaying junior and senior high art students' work will be held Monday in the junior high halls and cafeteria at the Valley City Junior/Senior High School.
Art teacher Kelly Callahan said the show is from 6 to 8 p.m., and a senior high choir concert will be held at 7 p.m. that evening too in the Hi-Liner Activity Center.
Callahan said the art show gives students an opportunity to show their friends and family some of the work they had done throughout the past semester.
May 9th
Entrants are being sought for the 2013 North Dakota Govenor's Photo Contest, now in its 10th year.
Gov. Jack Dalrymple and the North Dakota Tourism Division, in partnership with American Automobile Association, announced the start of the contest Tuesday. This year's contest will end Aug. 23.
