After a season of controversy between Barnes County officials and Valley City, county commissioners have elected to move forward with negotiations on a lease agreement for new offices for the Barnes County Sheriff's Department.
The sheriff's new home will likely be the old USDA building located off Winter Show Road. With an annual lease of $17,820 per-year and the costs for installing new technology for the building, the move will cost significantly more than staying in the Valley City Law Enforcement Center where the sheriff's department is currently located.
A tabletop exercise on establishing a special medical shelter during future public emergencies will take place April 16 in Valley City.
“It will be a state-run exercise on how to set up and run a medical shelter if needed in our community – say if we had to evacuate for flooding,” said Theresa Will, director of the City-County Health District.

The Valley City State University Pre-Professional Club will be involved in a Community Soup and Sandwich Feed on Wednesday, April 3.
Money raised will benefit both the club and the Hospice of the Red River Valley.
The Pre-Professional Club at VCSU is for students interested in careers in the medical field, graduate school and law.

The Valley City City Commission approved the only bid that was submitted for clean-up of the basement in the Law Enforcement Center.
The bid was awarded to Trio Environmental Consulting, Inc. in the amount of $89,600.
Police Chief Fred Thompson said after the clean-up is complete, the basement will likely not be used as a firing range in the future.

Chase Carpenter will move across the river. Carpenter, a senior at Valley City High School, signed Tuesday, March 19, to play basketball for the Valley City State University Vikings.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The UCLA Bruins now have until Friday to try and adapt to life without their second leading scorer before playing Minnesota in the South Regional of the NCAA tournament.
Freshman Jordan Adams broke his right foot in the Pac-12 tournament semifinals, and the Bruins (25-9) lost to Oregon in the championship game with no time to prepare and Adams watching from the bench wearing a boot.
The 11-time national champion Bruins still earned a No. 5 seed and will play 11th-seeded Minnesota (20-12).

Valley City Training Officer Phillip Hatcher was the first officer in the Valley City Police Department to attend free training offered by the Center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston, Ala.
The CDP is operated by the United States Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency and is the only federally-chartered Weapons of Mass Destruction training facility in the nation.
The hands-on training enables responders to effectively prevent, respond to and recover from real-world incidents involving acts of terrorism and other hazardous materials.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — The University of North Dakota men's basketball team's first-round game in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament has been delayed by weather.
UND was to play at Northern Iowa on Tuesday night. The game has been moved to Wednesday night due to a winter storm.
UND says blizzard conditions in eastern North Dakota and parts of Minnesota on Monday made it impossible for the team to travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa.
