County Plans Major Work on BC 21

September 20, 2013

Barnes County plans to mill and overlay 18 miles of Barnes County Road 21 north from Valley City to State Highway 26 as its major road project for 2014, said Road Superintendent Kerry Johnson Thursday.
Johnson said county residents will end up paying about $450,000 of the estimated $3.25 million total cost.

Tennis Play-In Monday

Valley City tennis (1-6 Eastern Dakota Conference, 1-8 overall) played at Shanley (4-3, 4-3) on Thursday in their last regular season EDC match of the year.

Shanley took the match 7-2, but the eighth-seed Hi-Liners' EDC Regional Tournament play-in match against ninth-seed Wahpeton on Monday bears the most important outcome.

The match against Shanley, make no mistake, was an exhibition of Hi-Liner talent.

VOLLEYBALL: Trojans Conquer Vikings

Dakota State beat North Star rival Valley City State 3-0 (25-17, 27-25, 25-18) Wednesday night at Graichen Gymnasium to earn their second NSAA conference win in as many tries and drop the Vikings to 0-2 in the conference and 6-11 overall.

Dakota State improves 5-13 overall.

Senior middle hitter Aurissa Martens led the Vikes with 11 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Kelsey Labodi added five kills and sophomore Barb Ector four more.

Sophomore setter Stephanie Miller and sophomore middle hitter/right side hitter Rachel Hummel each recorded an ace.

Anderson, Sheriffs Ready to Repeat

Sheriffs Coach Reed Anderson is ready.

Thrashing the Vikings, 98-77, in last year's Deputies Football Game was so glorious, so enthralling, that he's looking forward to crushing them again, 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26 at Lokken Stadium.

Anderson became the Sheriffs' coach because he is the ultimate source of football expertise.

Teachers, Board At Impasse

Negotiations between Valley City teachers and the school board have hit an impasse with the board voting unanimously Tuesday to end the negotiation period with the Valley City Education Association.
Valley City School Board President Joyce Braunagel announced after the school board and its counsel met in executive session, that an impasse would be declared as board members had learned that day that the VCEA had already notified the state of an impasse.

Dispatch Center Moving

Despite plans to finish Tuesday, Barnes County Dispatch as of Wednesday has still not completed its move from the Valley City Police Department to its new office in the Barnes County Courthouse.
Kimberly Franklin, director of Barnes County Emergency Management, said Tuesday, “The move is expected to be completed by the end of today if all goes well.” All didn't go exactly as planned, Franklin said Wednesday.

VCHS Celebrates Homecoming Next Week

Valley City High School has events planned all next week for its homecoming. Angela Van Bruggen, VCHS student council advisor, encourages the community to come out and celebrate their Hi-Liner pride.
New this year is a community pep fest and coronation Monday night at 7:15 p.m. at the Hi-Liner Activity Center. The free community event will consist of the pep band, cheerleaders and dance team followed by a ceremony featuring the VCHS Concert Choir to crown the 2013 homecoming king and queen.

Hi-Liner Tennis Will Fight for 8th Seed

Valley City tennis (1-5 EDC, 1-6 overall) hosted Fargo Davies (1-5, 1-7) on Tuesday in a duel for the seventh seed in the Regional Tournament.

Davies took the match, 7-2, to draw even with Fargo North for the sixth spot.

"This loss means that regardless of the result of our last EDC match at Shanley on Thursday, we will be the 8th seed," Hi-Liner Tennis Head Coach Matt Nielson said. "Wahpeton is the 9th seed, and will come play us in a play-in match on Monday, with the winners moving onto regionals in Fargo that Thursday (Sept. 26) and the loser's team season ending."

VC Man Arrested on Sex Charges

A Valley City man has been arrested and charged with gross sexual imposition.
Timothy Tucker, 30, was arrested on Sept. 10 for the Sept 5 incident that involved a female under 15, according to Barnes County State's Attorney Lee Grossman.
Tucker, who was arrested by Valley City Police, is held in the Barnes County Correctional Facility on $10,000 bond. His next court date will be Oct. 12.

Native of Mexico Speaks on Country's Independence at VCSU

A new club, Diversity @ VCSU, held its first event related to diversity and inclusion Monday afternoon. In an effort to promote and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Abel Turrubiates, native of Mexico, gave a presentation on Mexican Independence Day in Valley City State University's Skoal Room.
The event, open to students and the community, was the first of many planned over the next two semesters. VCSU hired diversity and inclusion coordinator Nadja Johnson early this year to educate students on various cultures throughout the world and help students of all diversities feel included.
