Viking Football Gold Card Blitz Coming Sept. 12

Valley City State Football began its annual sale of Gold Cards on Monday.

Gold Cards cost just $15 and qualify the holder for discounts to numerous businesses and restaurants in the Valley City area. Cards can be purchased from any VCSU football player.

On the evening of Sept. 12, the football team will conduct its annual Gold Card Blitz - wearing their jerseys and going door-to-door in the community selling the cards.

All funds raised from the sale of Gold Cards support the VCSU football program.

Viking XC Wins Valley City Invite; Hi-Liners in Top 10

Valley City State's harriers started the season on top Friday at Valley City Country Club.

The Viking men's cross country team took first place at its home meet, opening the season with a team victory and two individuals finishing in the Top 5.

Hi-Liners Hold Serve in Bismarck

Hi-Liner volleyball completed a 4-2 campaign over Labor Day Weekend at the East / West Tournament in Bismarck, losing only to Minot and Jamestown.

Senior setter Jessica Denholm served 53 assists on the weekend. Junior setter / defensive specialist Samantha Coit added six more.

Junior middle hitter Clarisa Olson racked up 33 kills, Senior outside / right hitter Madison Taylor spiked 28 and Dierra Diegel 26.

Senior middle hitter Danica Diegel provided eight blocks, Olson four and Taylor 3.

Olson swooped in for 62 digs, Dierra Diegel 49 and Danica Diegel 47.

Vikings Spike Mystics

Viking volleyball opened its home schedule with a 3-1 victory Monday night over Bismarck State College.

The Vikings (4-7) handed the Mystics (9-1) their first loss of the season, 25-19, 25-17, 20-25, 25-16.

Middle hitter Aurissa Martens led the Vikings with 10 kills and Alley Theroux added eight as VCSU picked up its fourth win of the season and second win in a row.

Stephanie Miller led the Vikings with 20 assists and Anna Neufeld added 15 more. Rachel Hummel totaled seven kills and two blocks.

Bismarck State was led by Madison Deibert with 13 kills.

Dickinson Stuffs Hi-Liners

Hi-Liner football faced a tough opener on Friday night as they hosted Dickinson, a team with 18 seniors — among them 10 offensive and defensive linemen, and six wide receivers — to Valley City's nine.

Dickinson's senior experience made the difference as the Midgets scored 41 points in the first half en route to a 48-0 win at Hanna Field. The Hi-Liners committed three turnovers — a fumble and two interceptions — on the night.

VC Getting Movie Theater

Valley City will get a new movie theater by Nov. 1, said Jeremy Zako of Bismarck, who plans to call the theater Cinema Flix.
Jennifer Feist of the Valley City-Barnes County Development Corp. introduced the Bismarck resident to county commissioners Monday morning, at the same time as she asked commissioners to provide a $25,000 grant to help the theater open from development corp. budget.
Commissioners voted 5-0 to provide the requested grant.

Salvation Army Does Backpack Program

Backpacks filled with school supplies were given to families in need by the Barnes County Salvation Army, said Lee Isensee, chairman of the county organization.
Thursday Isensee said the Barnes County Salvation Army's school and backpack program was chaired by Jana Olson and Dave Carlsrud.

Eagles Hosts Polka Fest

The Valley City Eagles Club held its annual Polka Fest Saturday
and Sunday. A crowd was on hand both days to dance to polka and old-time country music including songs by Albert Mikesh, a one-man-band.

Meeting Was Official Griggs County Meeting

September 3, 2013

An opinion issued Wednesday by North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem requires the Griggs County Commission give John Wakefield meeting minutes of a Feb. 12 meeting without charge.
Wakefield asked the attorney general for an opinion on his position that county commissioners violated North Dakota's open records and open meeting laws.
