Second Truck Crash Victim Identified

August 23, 2013

Carl Bjustad, 64, of Sheldon, was identified as the second victim in a fatal truck crash near Litchville Aug. 14.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol said in a release that Bjustad and Allan Tofsrud, 46, of Leeds, were both killed Aug. 14 when their semi trucks collided at the intersection of Highway 46 and Highway 1.
The NDHP said Tofsrud was traveling on Highway 46 and failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Highway 1 and struck Bjustad, who was traveling on Highway 1. Both trucks came to rest in the northeast ditch of the interchange.

Stoudt-Ross Ford, Miller Motors Moving

Two Valley City auto dealerships are moving, allowing both to continue to grow. Stoudt-Ross Ford plans to build a new facility on Winter Show Road, and Miller Motors will move into the existing Ford building.
Stoudt-Ross Ford owner Steve Ross said it's a great time to be in business in the Valley City area and North Dakota as a whole.

Disc Spark Starts Fire

A stray spark caused by discing on the Chuck Reidman farm 14 miles south of Valley City in Scandia Township caused a field fire about 2:26 p.m. Thursday, said Valley City Fire Chief Gary Retterath.
Retterath said Reidman was discing on his farm, when a spark ignited dead grass in a slough. "It wasn't very bad – we wet it down so it wouldn't get into another field," Retterath said.
The fire chief blamed the fire on especially dry conditions.

BC ARC Awards Scholarship

The Arc of Barnes County recently presented Hilary Larson, a senior at Minnesota State University-Moorhead, with a $1,000 scholarship to help further her education, said Lavonne Lawrence.
ARC board members Barb Cook and Ken Merkes presented Larson with a check for winning the 2013 Arc of Barnes Scholarship at the August ARC board meeting.

Volunteers Needed To Help Low-Income Seniors

AARP’s volunteer operated Tax-Aide program is looking for new volunteers across North Dakota, including Valley City.
Lyle Halvorson, who works for AARP in North Dakota, said Wednesday, “We did have a volunteer in Valley City, but she retired.”

Heitkamp Visits VCSU

U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D-NPL) visited Valley City State University where she met last Thursday with the public along with VCSU president Dr. Steve Shirley as well as the presidents of Jamestown College and Mayville State University.
The purpose of Heitkamp's visit was to discuss student loan reform and a new law recently signed into law by President Barack Obama.

Clancy Keeps Active as Volunteer

Rita Clancy keeps things interesting during coffee breaks for volunteers at Valley City's Nearly-Nu Store.
The 85-year-old Valley City resident has been volunteering at the thrift shop for about 20 years.
Monday afternoon, fellow volunteers celebrated her 85th birthday with a cake.

Fence Co. Punctures Gas Line

August 20, 2013

A post hole digger being used by a fence company punctured a natural gas line near the FEI Inc. building at 913 14th Street SW, ,just south of Interstate 94 Tuesday afternoon in Valley City, causing firefighters and police to evacuate the business and block off the road for about a half hour.
The Valley City Fire Department got word of the gas leak shortly after 1 p.m., and police and firefighters began leaving the scene about 1:45 p.m.

BC Asking for 9-1-1 Assistance from City

Barnes County has requested financial assistance from Valley City for operation of the 9-1-1 dispatch center for which the county took over day-to-day operations just last week.
According to an e-mail from Barnes County Emergency Manager Kim Franklin to members of the Valley City Commission and other city officials, the county believes the city should pay toward the system.
"As Valley City is more than 50 percent of the dispatch calls, I think that they should still be willing to pay towards the system and help ensure the safety of all citizens," Franklin wrote.
