Fund, CaringBridge Set Up for Accident Victim

A fund has been set up at Dacotah Bank for Geraldine (Gerri) Knutson, 65, of Valley City, who was seriously injured in a multi-vehicle accident Friday, Aug. 16. A CaringBridge website has also been set up for her at www.caringbridge.org/visit/geraldinegerriknutson. Visitors to the site can track her recovery progress and leave messages on the guestbook.
Knutson's 2012 Chevrolet Impala was struck head-on on Main Street by a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, estimated by the North Dakota Highway Patrol at about 70 mph.

RedHawks Clinch North

August 29, 2013

The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks held off the Amarillo Sox to clinch the 2013 American Association North Division title with a 11-7 victory Tuesday at Newman Outdoor Field.

Tim Alberts, Keith Brachold and Ronnie Bourquin each had three hits and played a role in big innings for Fargo-Moorhead (59-35).

Hanna Field South Gate Will Close For First Two Football Home Games

August 29, 2013

Due to street construction on the south side of Hanna Field, the drive-in gate will not be open for Valley City's first two home games against Dickinson and Grafton High Schools. VCHS regrets this inconvenience and would ask that all fans enter from the west gate of the Hanna field parking lot.

VCHS has also released a set of reminders:
 
1.    The Booster Club will be hosting the first brat and burger feed this Friday (Aug. 30, 6 p.m.) and will also be holding its annual fundraiser drive with a booth on the south side of the grand stands.

Vikings Will Play Ball This Fall

August 29, 2013

In what's viewed as a major change, North Star Athletic Association college baseball teams will now be able to play games in the fall.

The NSAA Executive Committee approved a plan Monday that allows Valley City State and the four other NSAA schools to schedule baseball games this fall that count towards their overall record for the 2014 season.

Knights Serve Hi-Liners

August 29, 2013

Valley City tennis looked to make progress when they hit the road for their Eastern Dakota Conference match at Grand Forks Central on Tuesday.

Central took the match 9-0, but Hi-Liner coach Matt Nielson definitely sees improvement.

Nielson noted that Valley City's No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams both lost by a tie-breaker and a break. The No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 singles teams fell by a break each set.

Valley City State Invitational Friday

Valley City State University kicks off its 2013 cross country campaign when it hosts the first meet of the season on Friday, Aug. 30.

The VCSU Invitational will take place at the Valley City Country Club and will feature a handful of area teams.

The college women will run a 4K race beginning at 4 p.m. The college men will wrap up the meet with a 5K race starting at about 4:30 p.m. Junior varsity and varsity high school races beginning at 2 p.m.

Hi-Liner Tennis Hosts Conference Opener

Valley City High tennis faced Fargo South Friday in Valley for the Eastern Dakota Conference opening match, with the Bruins taking the day, 8-1.

"We are making strides as a team," Hi-Liners coach Matt Nielson said. "I would not have been able to say any match last year that everyone gave 100 percent."

CCH Offers Hot Weather Safety Tips

Because of extremely high temperatures across North Dakota including Barnes County this week, the state health department is urging everyone to take precautions to protect their health, said Dr. Terry Dwelle, state health officer for the North Dakota Department of Health.
The National Weather Service predicts temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s through Saturday, with the Wednesday heat index value at 95.

New Principal at Washington

Washington Elementary School students have a new principal this year. Chad Lueck replaces Wayne Denault, who retired the end of last school year. Lueck said he is excited to join the district.
Before taking the job in Valley City, Lueck worked in the Litchville-Marion School district for seven years, five of which he was the elementary principal.
Lueck, originally from Lidgerwood, N.D., graduated from Valley City State University with a degree in elementary education, and received his master's degree in educational leadership from Tri-College University.
