Sex Offender Locked Up

July 11, 2013

Registered sex offender Allan Joseph Cook, 35, is back in the Barnes County Jail after allegedly providing a false address to officials as his home.
Cook registered with the Valley City Police Department indicating that he was residing at 305 4th Street in Valley City. Officials discovered later that he was not residing at that address. He was arrested in Valley City on Tuesday, July 9.

Red Cross: Local, National Aid

Since 1881, when Clara Barton started one of America's largest humanitarian organizations, the American Red Cross has mobilized volunteers to help alleviate suffering nation-wide. Valley City residents Paul and Barb Henke are a part of that tradition.
As long-time Red Cross volunteers, the Henkes are currently deployed to Arizona to assist victims displaced by wildfires and first responders who are fighting them.

South Central Adult Services Offer Wellness Checks

July 11, 2013

With the Help of a computer program, South Central Adult Services is offering a free service to check on how senior citizens are doing called “RU Okay?.”
Dolly Hoelmer, Barnes County outreach officer, said Wednesday, “If you just pick up the phone, we know they are OK,” Hoelmer said.

Job Service ND Helping Vets, Native Americans

Job Service North Dakota has federal grant money available to help unemployed veterans and Native Americans seeking training or education in oil or construction jobs through June 2014.
Bobbie Miller, one of two consultants working at the Valley City Job Service N.D. Office, said Wednesday the program is open to “any type of veteran and Native Americans meeting the criteria.”

Development Corp. Approves $50K to Help Establish Movie Theater

The Valley City-Barnes County Development Corp. has approved $50,000 to help establish a movie theater in Valley City. Development Corp. director of development Jennifer Feist said Wednesday, "We are letting the community know that the Development Corp. will support the establishment of a theater in Valley City with a $50,000 investment."
She said no one has committed to opening a theater yet, but is optimistic that one or more parties will step forward with this contribution.
