Overweight Trucks: Income for BC

April 26, 2013

Barnes County should get added income beginning in August when a new law takes effect that would put fines for overweight trucks on county roads in to the county's general fund. According to Tim Gillespie, the Multi-Agency Truck Regulatory Deputy for Barnes, Stutsman, LaMoure and Dickey Counties, fines for overweight trucks could add up to a substantial amount of income for counties.

Teaching About Tornados

Next week is Is National Severe Summer Awareness week, and learning opportunities are planned for Barnes County as well as locations throughout North Dakota throughout the week. Barnes County Emergency Manager Kim Franklin has plans for the week to help area students learn how to be prepared for emergency situations.

Valley City Girl Scouts Learn Robotics

April 26, 2013

The Valley City State University Technology Education Department hosted a robotics workshop April 20 for the local Valley City Girl Scout Troop 30306, said James Boe, department chairman.
James Boe said this is the second time his department has done a workshop for Girls Scouts. “Last year we did one on geocaching. My daughter is in the troop.”

Quilt of Remembrance

A quilt gifted to an American Cancer Society gala fundraiser in March has been donated to the Relay for Life, which plans to use the quilt as a fundraiser.
Linda Carico donated the "quilt of remembrance," said Hilde Van Gijssel, chairperson of the gala.
Van Gijssel said, "We wanted to give (the quilt) to the Relay to show that we support the Relay and show we're all working towards the same goal," which is to fight cancer.

Viking Women Take Home Opener

Spring officially arrived--and don't mind the piles of snow. The Valley State University Viking women took their home opener, a double-header, against the Mayville State Comets. It took only until the penultimate week of the season, and scratching out a softball field at Shelly Ellig Field at the Lokken Football Stadium, but softball was played. The teams split the two games with the Vikings the home team in the first game, and the Comets the home team in the second.
