Road Restrictions, Farmers Need Exemptions

The elimination of exemptions for weight restrictions on some Barnes County roads left many farmers and business people upset and confused over how business and farmers would haul fertilizer this spring. About 35 people were present at a regular meeting of the Barnes County Commission Tuesday. Many had objections to the elimination of exemptions. Commissioners listened, then voted to re-establish some of the exemptions.

City Votes Yes on AMI

The Valley City Commission voted 4-1 to move ahead with an Automated Metering Infrastructure system for public utilities at its Monday meeting. The AMI system will allow the city to read utility meters remotely, eliminating the need for meter-readers.

VC Schools to Seek Forgiveness on Snow Day

Valley City Public Schools superintendent Dean Koppelman plans to ask the school board to support him in asking the North Dakota Department of Instruction and Governor Jack Dalrymple's Office to forgive Monday's snow day and all others in the future.
Koppelman said Tuesday the school district has used all four of its designated makeup days this school year, and board members will discuss the issue during the next school board meeting, Tuesday, April 23 at 5 p.m. The meeting was rescheduled from Monday.

BC Roads Difficult To Keep Clear

Barnes County Highway Department work crews are having a difficult time keeping gravel roads cleared, said Superintendent Kerry Johnson. Except for about an hour early in the morning “gravel roads are sloppy and soft.”
During that hour, Johnson said plows can operate on the gravel roads to clear snow, but when the gravel roads thaw, plows just sink in.

Mont. Man Hurt in I-94 Crash

April 17, 2013

Montana man Gary Bateman was injured in a Monday evening single-vehicle accident near Valley City, said Rhonda Saxberg of the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
Bateman of Poplar, Mont., located near Williston, was driving a 2009 Ford Econoline van westbound on Interstate 94 about four miles west of Valley City when the accident happened.
