VC School Staff Win Awards

The Valley City Public School Board recognized two outstanding staff members for their recent achievements at its regular meeting on Tuesday.
Jefferson Elementary School counselor Judi Hillier earned the "North Dakota Elementary School Counselor of the Year Award", and Washington Elementary School principal Wayne Denault received the Region 6 "North Dakota Principal of the Year Award."
The board also accepted the retirement request of two employees and the resignation of another

Newlywed Couple Sees Bright Future

For a young, newlywed couple, an exciting and often unknown future is in store. Newlyweds Tommy and Sasha Newman, Valley City, have already made memories as a married couple that will last them a lifetime.

With Valentine’s Day today, romance is in the air, but Sasha said Tommy was romantic from the start.

“He was really good for me; he would do anything for me,” she said.

Secrets to a Long Marriage

Willard Boyer claims to know the secret to staying married for 62 years. “It’s easy,” he said. “Just do everything Ma says,”

Margaret Boyer was a bit less comic as she looked at her husband with a twinkle, “I just love being with him.”

Willard has been married to his sweetheart Margaret since soon after he returned from World War II where he was on a PT boat. Margaret had just finished nursing school and was working in Elgin, N.D., as a registered nurse.

Understanding Key To Long, Happy Marriage

For Vicky and Terry Jones the secret of staying together for 28 years and happily married for 22 years is being able to understand each other.
Said Terry, “To love and laugh. You’ve just got to work it out. Everything is not easy.”

Said Vicky, “I feel it (the marriage) gets better every year.”
Terry added, “It feels like you’re the right hand and the left hand. Each knows what the other is doing.”

The couple owns Vicky’s Viking Room, and Vicky is definitely the boss of the business.

Care Center Goes Red

National Wear Red Day, the kick-off to American Heart month was Friday, Feb. 1 and the Sheyenne Care Center took the challenge in more ways than one. On Feb. 1, most of the staff dressed in red to remind staff, residents, and visitors to choose a heart healthy change to reduce their risk of heart disease.

PA, Doctor Have Problems with Mercy Plan

Valley City doctor Madeline Luke and Physician’s Assistant Russ Kaufmann have problems with a plan by Mercy Hospital to end use of physician’s assistants in the hospital and provide 24-hour, seven days a week emergency room coverage by a doctor through a contract with an out-of-state company.

Dr. Luke, who works as a doctor three days per week at the Sanford Clinic, said Tuesday, “I’m concerned we will have a variety of physicians come through with no local ties” once the contract takes effect.

Ice Is Good for Fishing

Area ice fishermen have a much better year for the popular winter sport than they did last year, and they’ll get a chance to participate in a derby this weekend at Lake Ashtabula.

The new owners at Ashtabula Crossing are gearing up for their first annual ice fishing tournament this weekend.

Patty Hoff, who owns the resort and restaurant located at the East Lake Ashtabula crossing with her husband Scott and sister Mary Jean Cuffe, said, “we’ve had lots of people requesting to have tournament here, so we did.”

‘An Opportunity to Learn’: Youth Art Contest Aims To Teach About Wildlife

The United States Fish and Wildlife Service encourages students to participate in the annual Endangered Species Day Youth Art Contest to celebrate the eighth annual Endangered Species Day on May 17.

“Endangered Species Day honors a national commitment to recovering endangered species and their habitats and provides an opportunity to learn about what efforts are being made to conserve them,” said Leith Edgar of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in California.

VCHS Boys Get 1st EDC Win in 2 Seasons

Over the last two years, Valley City High School boys basketball coach Scott Hurlimann has watched his team play numerous games where they were close, but couldn't quite put the finishing touches on an Eastern Dakota Conference win.
But Tuesday at the Hi-Liner Activity Center, the team made the hump look more like a speed bump, beating Devils Lake 74-58 in a two-point EDC game. It was the team's first conference win since the 2010-2011 season.

Pressure-based Runs Get Packers Past VCHS Girls

The way Valley City High School girls basketball coach Jim McDaniel looked at it, his team had two issues in Tuesday night's 67-46 loss to No. 2 West Fargo.
"Two tough runs," he said, referring to both an 18-0 first half run and a 16-2 run early in the second half. "Against good teams, we can't allow them to have runs like that."
Both runs had a few commonalities. One, they broke open the score to keep Valley City from getting too close. Two, they both started when West Fargo went into a full-court press.
