Program at Care Center Involves Nature, Pets to Help Residents Feel At Home

Children, animals, plants and more help residents at the Sheyenne Care Center feel more at-home, more relaxed and less stressed thanks to a program called KAPPS.
KAPPS, which stands for Kids, Aromatherapy, Pets, Plants and Sound, was started at the center in 2000 and has been helping residents since.

BC Deputies Trained 1st Responders

Barnes County has agreed to pay about $1,024 to buy six new batteries and pads for defibrillators carried by Barnes County deputies.
Friday Barnes County Sheriff Randy McClaflin said he and all Barnes County deputies are trained as first responders and know how to use the medical devices carried in each squad car.
“It is a county standard, not a state standard,” McClaflin said.

Teachers, VCPS Impasse Hearing Tuesday

A public impasse hearing, to discuss differences dividing the Valley City Public Schools School Board and the Valley City Education Association, will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Jefferson Elementary School gymnasium.
After failed negotiations between the school board and the VCEA, a state mediator was called to assist in the dispute. The school board declared an impasse in the mediation process in September after the VCEA mad it known they were unwilling to continue.

VCHS Bowling Strong at Home

Valley City High School Varsity and JV bowling hosted the Sky Lanes meet on Saturday and protected their home lanes, each winning two of three matches and continuing to set the curve in the early season.

"We had many close games in each match, and I felt the guys held it together and bowled well against some very competitive teams," Valley City High School Coach Mary Berntson said. "We had a good weekend, and I have started to see some improvement in their game. I believe the team was happy with their performance."

Bishop Ryan Scratches Griggs/Barnes County

Griggs/Barnes County football looked to celebrate Homecoming with an upset of AA No. 1-ranked Bishop Ryan on Friday night, but Bishop Ryan led 30-0 at halftime with a powerful rushing attack en route to a 44-7 win.

Grafton Picks off Maple Valley/Enderlin Late

Touchdowns abounded when Maple Valley/Enderlin faced Grafton in Enderlin on Friday night for a battle of AA East Region rivals.

MV/E traded scores with the Spoilers throughout the night, but Grafton played just enough defense to hold on late for the 26-20 win.

Ross Makes All-EDC Cross Country Team, 3 Hi-Liner Teams in Top 10s

Hi-Liner cross country raced in the Eastern Dakota Conference Championships at Lincoln Drive Park in Grand Forks on Saturday, enduring wet, windy, and sloppy conditions on the way to Mikayla Ross's All-Eastern Dakota Conference Team-qualifying performance and three team Top-10 finishes.

"The footing might have been miserable, but the kids really had fun running and slipping through the mud and the muck," Hi-Liner Cross Country Head Coach Brian Engelhard said. "It was great to see their smiles after the finish, while being covered from head-to-toe with mud."
