This prairie branded me. I used to be just a girl trying to find myself. This prairie gave me a purpose. It wasnât a planned purpose. I never aspired to be âThe Blonde on the Prairie.â In fact âif you would have told me Iâd be called that I may have just walked away talking under my breath. Some guy named âBruceâ gave me the name after he printed the first or second column I ever wrote. I only met him once yet the impact he has had on my life is epic. Something like nine years have passed since he first printed that name.
The City of Valley City has closed the shooting range that was located in the basement of the Law Enforcement Center building, City Administrator David Schelkoph said Thursday.
âWe closed it (in December) because we had the Department of Health come in and they did a test; they told us they believe thereâs too much lead inside the shooting area,â Schelkoph said. âTo be safe rather than sorry we closed it down.â
Henrietta Dotting sat in a recliner in her room at the Sheyenne Care Center as she contemplated the significance of turning 107 on Jan. 4. âItâs not a big deal!â she said to her nephew Duane Farnquist.
âIt is a big deal!â he replied.
Indeed, Dotting doesnât attribute her longevity to anything she did or didnât do. Her mother lived to 94, so it could be biological.
At 106, Dotting is still sharp-minded. Even though her eyesight is nearly gone, she still spends many hours listening to books on tapes through a pair of headphones that Farnquist had to remove.
