Editor's note: 2012 was my first full calendar year as a staff member of the Times-Record, and what a year it was. Barnes County saw championships on both the state and national levels, and even the teams that fell just short gave fans a heck of a ride. Although there were too many sports stories to choose from, I worked with other members of the editorial staff to choose this list of 10 biggest happenings in local sports from the last year. With any abbreiviated list, there is sure to be a bit of disagreement.
Preschool children today are surrounded by violence. Much of the violence that children are exposed to is through television and other screen time. According to data from the Nielson Company, pre-schoolers ages two to five spend 32.5 hours a week in front of the television, watching TV, watching shows recorded by DVR, watching DVDs or playing video games.

Third-graders from Jefferson School teamed up to collect supplies for the Sheyenne Valley Friends of Animals. Here representative students from each of the four sections present their donations to SVFA members Kay Kringlie and Michele Grebel. The third-grade teachers who coordinated the effort are: Â Mrs. Potratz, Mrs. Goven, Mrs. Breckheimer and Mrs. McDaniel. Â The donations will be used for needy animals in the Valley City area.
