The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) and the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) has issued a Travel Alert for the southeast region of North Dakota including the cities of Jamestown, Valley City, Fargo, Wahpeton, Lisbon, Edgeley, Ellendale and surrounding areas due to bands of heavy snow creating snow covered roadways, icy conditions and reduced visibility. Conditions are such that motorists can still travel in these areas, but should be advised that conditions could change rapidly in the evening hours.

FAIRFAX, Va. â The National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action conducted a national poll of its members and found near unanimity among NRA members on a wide range of issues involving mental health reform and firearm rights.
Gun control advocates including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, as well as various media outlets, have released data claiming to represent the views of NRA members, despite the fact that none of those surveys had access to the NRAâs membership list.
Barnes County North Senior MaKenzie Krueger, a student from the West Campus, was awarded a Kindle Fire by the schoolâs Title I Reading Committee Jan. 22 for earning 2,500 Accelerated Reader points.
Principal Joan Klein said Friday she figures Krueger had to read between 250 and 300 books in order to win the device, which can be used for reading books along with accessing the Internet.
Attorney Carl Martineck is the new Barnes County Assistant Stateâs Attorney, replacing Brad Cruff, who left the stateâs attorneyâs office after being elected Judge of Southeast District Court Eight in Wahpeton.
Martineck practiced law in Valley City for the past few years specializing in real estate, family law, custody, divorce, wills and trust, and criminal defense as the court-appointed attorney for the district court.
Since coach Jeff Kaminsky took charge of the Valley City State University mens basketball team in 2005, the Vikings have prided themselves on defense.
While the defense was plentiful Saturday at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse, it was the offense that never seemed to rest as the No. 24 Vikings had a 111-61 win over Oglala Lakota (S.D.) College.
It was the highest-scoring game the Vikings have had since a 99-56 home win against Trinity Bible College last season and the first time the Vikings have broken the 100-point mark since the 2004-2005 season-opener.
TOWER CITY â It may be almost February, but the Maple Valley girls basketball hasn't had much of a chance to see teams from its district.
Friday in Tower City, the No. 4 Raiders got a reminder of the challenge ahead in a 70-51 win over Oak Grove.
Despite leading by at least nine points at the end of each of the three quarters, the Raiders got little breathing room as the Grovers constantly worked to narrow the lead, which resulted in one tie in the third quarter, but no lead changes.
