Opinion: Spring's warmth is good news for local sports fans

March 20, 2012

As a reporter, you tend to spend time on the phone.
Some of it's spent arranging interviews, some of it's spent hearing what information you got wrong. Fortunately, there's been a non-work related phone call I've been making a lot lately and it's the most anticipated phone call a guy can get after a long day's work.
It goes something like this:
(Ring ring)
"Hello."
"Hey, it's Scott. You want to play catch?"
"Yeah, sure. I'll meet you at City Park in a few minutes."
(Click.)
The call is followed by the simplest of pleasures — an hour of tossing cowhide amongst a few leather mits.

Town and Country Club opens golf course for season

March 19, 2012

The Valley City Town and Country Club likes to get its golf course open as early as possible each year, usually aiming for a mid-April opening.
This weekend, the club got an early start.
“April 15 is always kind of our target,” Club Manager Brian Yanish said. “We were hoping with the winter we had we could golf in March and it worked out that way this year.”
Following a week of temperatures in the mid-to-high 60 degree range, the club beat its April 15 goal by nearly a month, opening for the season Friday afternoon.

March 13, 2012

In the eight games leading up to the Valley City State University baseball team’s spring break trip to Tucson, Ariz., the Vikings fared well enough offensively but only scored more than five runs in one of those games.
So in that sense, the team lit things up to open the trip, which lasts until Friday.
The Vikings opened the tournament with games Sunday against the Illinois Institute of Technology and Norwich (Vt.) University and had no problems getting things going. The Vikings combined for 36 total hits and 35 runs.
VCSU beat Illinois Tech 17-6 and Norwich 19-6.
