The Christmas story, which is the story of the birth of Jesus Christ as told in the book of Matthew from the Bible, has been told in a variety of ways throughout many cultures and generations.
The Nazarene Church in Valley City is telling the story through the eighth annual âJourney Through Christmasâ Dec. 13 and 14 from 7-9 p.m.
The event depicts the Christmas story in six scenes with 30 costumed characters and live animals.
âIt is called âJourney Through Christmasâ because it is a drive-through experience,â the church said in an email.
A brand-new Soap Box Derby Association is off to a flying start with the help of matching donations from the Dakota Plains and Land Oâ Lakes Cooperatives.
Monday Rydell Becker, manager of the main Dakota Plains store in Valley City, presented Scott Crump, president of the new Sheyenne Valley Soap Box Derby Association and association Vice President Wes King with a $4,000 check.
On Friday, area residents will have the opportunity to do some Christmas shopping while helping women in East Africa. The Asante Network, a charitable group that markets the crafts of several groups of African women, will hold a Bazaar Friday in the gift shop at the Sheyenne Care Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The bazaar will feature; textiles, including batiks and embroidered pieces that range from wall hangings to clothing and bedding; carvings; vividly colored beaded items including jewelry and household items; and hand woven baskets and mats in an array of colors.

FARGO â As the North Dakota State and South Dakota State University football teams took the field for their NCAA FBS second round playoff game Saturday, all expectations were a close one.
Interstate rivalry? Check. Pockets of the stadium lined with loud crowds from either school? Check. When the teams met up just a few weeks ago at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome, the game was decided by a field goal.
But in the rematch, the visiting Jackrabbits seemed to left their lucky foot, or feet, at home.
The holiday season is well underway, and that means people are spending more time shopping. Dacotah Bank in Valley City hopes people in the area will support their local economy by buying their holiday gifts at stores in Valley City.
Dacotah Bank is teaming up with the Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce again this year for their campaign to push people to shop locally during the holiday season.
The campaign, which is now called â12 Days of Christmas,â starts Dec. 6 and is held every business day thereafter leading up to Christmas.

The largest cattle show in North Dakota, the 17th annual North Star Classic at the North Dakota Winter Show Event Center, wrapped up on Sunday, as organizers deemed it a huge success.
According to Winter Show board member Kory Sorby, the show had about 550 entries by people from five states : North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and South Dakota.
The largest increase was in the number of kids in the junior classes, Sorby said. About 217 kids entered the junior class on Sunday.
âShowmanship was incredible,â said Sorby of the number of kids in the class.

Washington and Jefferson elementary schools celebrated Red Ribbon Week Nov. 19-21. Â
Barnes County will soon have a new assistant Stateâs Attorney. Ashley Heitkamp will join the Stateâs Attorneyâs office in early January. She will replace Brad Cruff who was elected Southeast District Judge in Wahpeton earlier this month.
Lee Grossman, Barnes County Stateâs Attorney, said he was happy for Cruff, but sad to see him leave.
Heitkamp will begin as an assistant 2. At that level she will be nearly equal to Grossman in responsibility he told the Barnes County Commission at its last regular meeting.
Lee Isensee, Barnes County Salvation Army chairman, feels the organization is blessed based on donations so far this year, but with increased demand contrasted with last year, he hopes there will be enough donations to meet the need.
The local organization needs both bell ringers and donations.
âWe feel so blessed for all the people who ring for us, but we need 500 (spots filled) and have 300 left to fill,â Isensee said Wednesday.
The mission goal of $32,000 is $10,000 greater than last yearâs goal, a result of tremendous success last year combined with great need, said Isensee.
