Leah Haak, daughter of Tim and Linda Haak, Valley City, has been selected to receive the North Dakota State University Frances Swenson Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $880. She was recognized at the NDSU College of Human Development and Education Honors Day Brunch and Award Ceremony on April 17.
Haak is a sophomore majoring in dietetics. She is active in Student Dietetics Association, Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, United Campus Ministries, University Chorus and University Chamber Chorus. She also is a resident assistant.
Students from Griggs County took first place overall at the 2012 Regional Elementary Science Olympiad which took place at the Eagles Aerie in Valley City on Wednesday.
Teams from seven schools â Maple Valley, St. Catherine's, LaMoure, Barnes County North, Griggs County, and Valley City's Washington Blue and Washington Gold â participated in 19 events at the competition, with BCN taking second place and Maple Valley third.
"All the teams did quite well," said Valley City teacher Jim McDaniel. "It came right down to the final event."
After being cancelled for two years due to Sheyenne River flooding, the American Quarter Horse Association annual show is back on, and the North Dakota Winter Show event center will once again be host to saddles instead of sandbags.
"The last two years had to be cancelled because of the flooding, so we're excited to have it back again," said NDWS Barn Superintendent Dallas Schmidt. "There's a lot of people in the area who compete. We get a good turnout, and just about all of our stalls will be full."

As the Valley City State University softball team swept a double-header Tuesday against the University of Minnesota - Crookston, there was plenty of excitement over the two wins.
But at times, third baseman Jane Pettit admits she was momentarily caught off guard.
Standing on second base, Pettit would catch a glimpse of the Vikingsâ dugout and find herself getting a bit emotional.
âSometimes you just catch yourself having one of those moments where you just look at them and youâre like âIâm going to miss this,ââ Pettit said.

VCHS golf team takes 4th
The Valley City High School boys golf team took fourth place in a tournament with other Eastern Dakota Conference teams Tuesday at the Village Green Golf Course in Moorhead, Minn.
The Hi-Liners finished with a team score of 319, only eight strokes behind Red River. West Fargo won the meet with a score of 290.
Individually, Nick Jenson led the Hi-Liners with a score of 74, which finished him in a tie for seventh place.

McBride named DAC pitcher of the week
Valley City State University pitcher Katie McBride was named the Dakota Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week Monday.
McBride, a senior from Grand Rapids, Minn., went 3-1 as the Vikings were 5-1 on the week. In her four outings, McBride pitched 26.2 innings, giving up seven runs, three earned, on 26 hits with 15 strikeouts and five walks.
It is the the second time this season McBride has been chosen as the DAC Pitcher of the Week.

VCSU football camp deadline Wednesday
Three Barnes County North students have achieved âstraight Aâs.â

Sisters Hope and Hannah Willson, fifth and seventh graders, respectively, and senior Cody Beach qualified for the 2012 NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program) National competition in Louisville, Ky., on May 10 and 11 following the state competition that saw the school finishing fourth as a team in the senior high division.
âWe were 15 points from third,â said coach Kurt Wagner at the BCN School Board Meeting last Wednesday. âNext year.â
Plans to build a shared use path in Pioneer Park are going forward this year, and a new bridge is under construction to accommodate both bikes and pedestrians.
The heavy lifting on the bridge is being handled entirely by shop superintendent Jim Olstad, who has worked for the Valley City Park District for 35 years.
The bridge is a side project that Olstad works on periodically in the Park District maintenance shop at City Park.
âItâs just me, but I have tools to help,â Olstad said of the large amount of metal going into the bridge. âI move it all by myself.â
Valley City State Universityâs spring semester is coming to a close, and with graduation right around the corner, the university has announced its keynote, graduate and undergraduate commencement speakers.
Ken Astrup, General Manager of the Dakota Plains Cooperative in Valley City will be the keynote speaker at VCSUâs graduation ceremony on May 12 in the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse in southwest Valley City.

A Jamestown couple can be considered heroes after saving the life of a fellow resident from the city of the Jimmies.
Cole Huber and Jesse Fieberger were traveling on Interstate 94 when they came across the scene of an accident Thursday.
A 1989 Chevrolet Celebrity driven by David Paul Floyd Brown, 30, had driven off the westbound lane and into Hobart Lake near mile marker 286.
